Is there a book?
Is there a book out there that goes over the basics of owning a handgun. ie; safety, cleaning, shooting, etc. I know it wouldn't be specific for every gun but good dolid basics you could begin or build on? what do you think?

I think their several different books you could get Maco. I think the Gun Digest series of books is a good place to start. The GD Book of Combat Handgunnery is a god place to start learning about firearms in general and their use in a deffensive capacity. The GD book series of books also covers several different guns specifically like the 1911, Glock, AR15, and others. Brian Enos' Book will give you some Zen style competition and general shooting tip and techniques.

I took the NRA "Basic Pistol" class. It is very basic. Cleaning, gun safety, shooting, gun operation, ammunition, and even some range rules and etiquette. The book is a little dated.

NRA Basic Pistol Class
I concur with the opinion above... if you're a new person to pistol shooting I strongly advise you to take the NRA First Steps (Pistol) and/or NRA Basic Pistol Class. They have valuable, hands-on instruction both in the classroom and on the range that will help you understand the workings of the firearm and ammunition and get you started on basic shooting skills.
The other big advantage to such a class is the safety training you get!
If you decide to take this route you won't regret it... every time I teach one of those classes I sleep better knowing the students are started down the right path.
Unload and show clear...

+1
I took that class and had a hundred or so questions before I took it, and left feeling confident from what I'd been taught. I think everyone who buys a handgun and has never owned one before should take the class.
