OP, you've tried the "trick" with the wrench and tapping the guide rod forward?

Just for those who have a similar problem, here is how I was able to finally fix this issue with the help of a gun enthusiast and studying the exploaded view plans carefully. Hopefully someone can benefit in the future, since the sticky regarding a stuck slide does not mention this resolution.
See attached pics. First you gently tap out this pin and the slide released, at least for me. BTW my guide rod was centered, which is generally the problem.
Next clean, lube, whatever maintenance you want to do on the gun. Then reassemble the pin before the attaching the slide. We used a quarter and a light towel to gently push it exactly into the middle before attaching the slide. Gun works perfect now. Thanks to all for the help.

Once you remove the slide the guide rod aligns itself.
