PRP Trigger Kits / gunsmith vs do it yourself
I just got back my XDm 45 yesterday with the ultimate trigger kit done by a local gunsmith (a very good one), and the trigger is fantastic - absolutely clean and crisp with a very short take up, clean break, and almost no overtravel. The reset is also very quick. I had him put the pull right between 4 and 4.5 lbs and the gun now shoots dead on where the sights are set from the factory (I had been low or left, and I know that it was MY fault due to not handling the longish pull well, now that the trigger is crisp and clean I'm back on dead center).
I also did a drop in kit on my XDm 9mm, and as far as comparisons go the 9 is (as PRP says) about 75-85% as good as the gunsmith done trigger. It's really nice and clean, takeup and overtravel greatly reduced, and all in all a huge improvement to the stock trigger. It is just a hair lighter than the ultimate kit in the 45 (I asked the gunsmith to set me at 4 to 4.5 and he was able to adjust when doing the work), the drop in is maybe .5 of a lb less.
In summary, a good gunsmith will do a better job than the drop in. But it is not a huge difference, and if you do it yourself you save a bunch of cash and wind up with a fantastic trigger. I also have a sub compact 9mm that is my primary carry gun and if I do a trigger job on it I will use the drop in kit.
Last note on the drop in kits - I am not particularly adept at doing this type of work. I was very hesitant to do the striker pin replacements even with the video that walks you through it. On the drop in kit I watched the video, then went very slowly and carefully through it, going over sections clearly, pausing, replaying, and being as careful as I could, and it went together just fine.
Thanks to the PRP guys for some fantastic products!

I have been curious about how much better in terms of the trigger pull length people could actually obtain doing it themselves or having a gunsmith do it vs the drop in kit. The drop in kit places the trigger back stop 4.38mm away from the gun. If anyone has any electronic calipers to see how their custom compares to what PRP shaves it to I'd be curious what it is.

I agree Snaphook about the videos. I installed my PRP Ultimate Match Trigger yesterday. I have NEVER done more than a field strip on any gun and not too handy when it comes to many things mechanical.
I watched the PRP videos (1 & 2) several times while waiting for my kit to arrive. Set up the iPad and went to work with the videos running. No problems at all. Got a little advise here for the over-travel stop and things are now good to go to the range later for a test run but everything cycles and feel great.

I just had the ultimate trigger kit installed by a gunsmith and its great. Feels 100% better then my stock trigger. I have a xd9sc and with my trigger kit i had problems with my sear fitting properly. Spend about 2 hours trying to get it to move freely. Gave up and sent it in to the gunsmith. Well worth the money to.install it. The trigger pull is awesome now

I also installed my own ultimate trigger kit and couldn't be happier. I will NEVER understand why Springfield doesn't sell the gun with a trigger that is as nice as the ultimate trigger kit.
I also splurged and purchased all the Titanium stuff that they sell and installed it.

SA does not sell them that way because the price would be much higher. Not every one wants to pay the price, since some people actually like the stock trigger!
