Mine was a little tight at first as well. Did you get it new or used?

I don't use the slide release to drop the slide. If a loaded mag is in the gun just pull back on slide and let go. If empty pull back on slide then push the release then let the slide go forward slowly this will save damage to the frame, slide, and fire control parts.
When the slide strips a round from the mag it slows it down. many custom gun builders will tell their owners not to slam the slide on a empty chamber. With all that said its your gun do what you want, just don't treat mine that way.

+1
I do the same. That's why it's actually called the slide stop not slide release. Having the gun slam forward and the resulting sound all indicate additional wear that is easily avoided simply by pulling the slide back and walking it forward when empty. Of course if there is a round for it to pull I release it from the back position. I like to keep my nice things nice too.

Yup, not a slide release its a slide stop. To many movies have guys wanting to use it all tacticool. Pull that slide back and let her slide forward like its designed.

lol, didn't know it was an ongoing debate, I just looked in my XDm operation manual and that's what the manufacture refers to it as on page 23. How one refers to it indicates how they likely use it.

Give it time.
The slide stop on my new-in-the-box XD .45 compact was also painfully hard to operate. I worked it over and over and over while watching TV (riding it forward after release). It improved quite a bit. I put the first 100 rounds through it yesterday and the slide stop now operates easily.
Same goes for the mag release that was stiff when releasing a full magazine.
I guess XDs just need a short break in.
