Newbie Maintenance Q's

Got a xdm 9mm compact and plan to carry daily (once I get my cwp). This is my first semi-auto, the book says to very lightly oil. I would generally be one that thinks in life the more lub the better, so help me understand exactly where I should and should not oil.

Also, as with all mechanical things, my new pistol and its parts have some aprox. usable life span. How long (rounds) is that and what parts will go first?

I have read I should plan to replace the roll pin but before I order one I just want to be sure that's not something Springfield has already addressed???

There are several good videos about field strip, cleaning, and oiling Springfield XD/XDm guns available on YouTube. One thing I have learned is that you do not want to put much oil into the striker area on the slide. Apparently this does nothing but cause the area to collect residue which slows the action of the striker. This in turn can result in fail to fire and other issues.
The striker roll pin issue seems to be ongoing. No design change has taken place.

You can either place a drop or two on the barrel. Run a lite patch of oil through the barrel, & wipe the frame where the slide rides. That's about all I do.

Can't say how many rounds before you have a part failure but many on here have put a thousand or more rds. w/o issue. I've never had a problem or had to repair anything on any of my 5 XDm's!

Think of a dab of grease on your fingertip and sprinkling sand on it. Every grain of sand that touches it will stick. That's what too much lube will do to your gun. Rule of thumb is that if the surface appears shiny from the lube, there is too much lube.

When I finish cleaning my gun, I put a drop or two of oil on a patch then run the patch through the barrel several times. I then replace the oily patch with a clean one and run it through a few times to get out the excess. I then wipe everything down inside and out with the first patch and towel it off. Be careful with spray degreaser type cleaners like action blaster, etc as they can get into the works flush away lube from places you can't easily access to re-lube.

Make sure to hit the sliding surfaces and any place the metal is shiny from contact. Avoid the firing pin/striker area as lube will collect over time there and cause light primer hits.

The only semi-fragile thing I know of, you already mentioned - that roll pin. Maybe after several thousand rounds, the recoil spring might soften up and benefit from a replacement.

Welcome to the forums and your new XDm.... You'll absolutely love it.

If you are worried about any parts I highly suggest the "upgraded" striker pins provided by PRP. (LINK HERE) They are a little more heavy duty and are less likely to break from dry firing. I put one in mine and just kept the original for an extra spare.

I've got about 1500 rds through mine now, and it's flawless.

As for Lube I have used many kinds such as:
Weapon Shield
Ballistol
Smith and Wesson Adv Gun Oil with Cerflon
Hoppes
Gunzilla
Mobil One (synthetic)
Royal Purple (synthetic)

and last but not least that I have absolutely fell in love with..... FROG LUBE
as silly as it may sound, it is totally phenomenal. There is nothing like throwing lead down range and seeing the slide and barrel oil itself as your shooting. I prefer the paste over the liquid.
After Four thorough, treatments with (hair dryer for heat) clean up after 200 rds at the range is an absolute breeze. That made me a true believer. I also have used patches after other products show clean and Frog Lube will still pull even more powder out. I just can't say enough about it. (oh, and I am not sponsored, paid or work for them and have no advantage in you using the product)
Anyway - with the XDm less is better - especially keep oil out of the striker channel towards the rear of the slide. As stated earlier, you do not want build up on the striker, that can cause light strikes.

I like to use some Super Lube "synthetic"grease (very very light) on the rails, and it stays put. If you keep your gun clean, you'll have no issues. If you are however in a very dirty environment, then you want to not use grease or keep your gun "wet". Also as stated before dust and sand will stick to your firearm, and the grit will wear down components and probably require premature degradation to them. I keep mine wet, and in my GunVault on my night stand ready to roll.

Hmmm... I can't think of anything else really to share. As far as lube goes, allot of it is personal preference, and you really can't go wrong with any. So what works for some may not work for others, I've tried so much and I am always looking for something to over throw Frog Lube, but I just haven't found it yet. It's that good. IMHO (in my honest opinion)

Enjoy that Beast!

Oh and if you want to see how I apply it, it is very similar to this...

Welcome to the Forum and to XD. Contrary to what you've heard, don't oil. Oil can get messy. A properly broken-in, quality, properly-fitted semi will run well almost dry, and that's the way I carry my XD9SC. BTW - over 1,000 rounds and NO failures. Oil or grease will attract dirt like you won't believe! I field strip and wipe mine down about once a week of daily carry, and clean it good after shooting anything more than one mag. I use a toothpick-tip dab of lithium (white) grease on the slide rails and striker. After shooting it a while, you will see wear marks. That tells you where to lube. FWIW - the Springfield is a very clean-shooting semi.
