Stupid Newbie questions

Just purchased a XDM compact .45 (this is my first handgun), and I have a couple stupid questions that I have heard different answers to. Do I need to disassemble and clean the magazines periodically? Is it necessary to lube anything (e.g. the spring or inside of the magazine) every once in a while?

Also, do I need to replace the recoil spring periodically?

Thanks!

i have heard it's good to break magazines down and clean them every now and then... i haven't done that to mine though. i think if you take care of them (don't drop them in mud) then it's not a big issue.

i took mine out of the box and started having fun! 1k rounds later i haven't had an issue with anything yet.

also, remember, there are no stupid questions, just stupid people

you could clean the mags after ~1K rounds or so. No real need to lube them.

also, recoil spring might need replacing, but after many thousands of thousands of rounds.

for now, just shoot and enjoy. a little basic cleaning and lube on the gun itself.

Welcome to the forum. Don't ever lube or oil your magazines. If you do they will attract dirt like a magnet.

If you don't oil or lube them, then how do you prevent them from rusting? This question also applies to springs and such inside the gun itself. I don't know what material they're made out of. I am under the assumption that they're made of steel and will rust if not treated.

When you clean your gun, you want to do some routine maintenance. I would suggest you look in the owners manual for the areas that need oil. You want to use the minimum amount of oil.
I like to put the thinest coat of oil on the slide rails, on the spring, the guide rod and the outside of the barrel.
