I was not a victim of the "shipping grease" like many others. I bought my XD9 service new and shot 200 rounds through it out of the box. Then, field stripped and cleaned for the first time. No issues. Shot another 300 rounds through it and then cleaned it again.
For the XD's it is really a matter of personal preference. Some clean after every range trip, some go hundreds or thousands of rounds between cleanings. I have not heard of any functional issues with either method.
but, if you plan to use this weapon as your carry piece, then maybe best to maintain it a little better than if it is just your range gun.

I clean my xdm9 everytime after a range, and if i don't shoot it for more then 4 weeks and it's been sitting in my safe in the box, i usually open it up and give it a light touch up. But i'm just crazy like that, I baby my weapons, and it's more of a hobby/activity then a chore.
Take care of the gun, and she won't let ya down.

Last Wednesday I shot 500 rounds. That brought total round count to 3000 and 800 since previous field strip cleaning. So I figured it was time for it's 2nd complete teardown. First was at 1000. Cleaned it all up, function tested, and was ready for the CCH class on Saturday. At the class the gun stopped after 3 shots. Huh?
Back home found out I apparently hadn't got the striker safety spring in correctly. Doh!! The striker safety was preventing the trigger from moving, like it was designed to do. Put the spring back in place and reassembled. Went and shot 50 rounds just to be sure. It was perfect again.

Always clean & lube a new firearm before taking it to the range. Then usually always(sometimes maybe a day or so after depending on time) clean & lube after a trip to the range.

I had a 45 ACP pistol a long time ago. Times have changed gun care and cleaning chemicals have drastically improved.
Can you guys list some good care and cleaning products that can be easily purchased locally.
Specifically what each product is for. I will be getting an XDM 45 C in the coming months and want to have all the correct stuff to properly care for it.
Thanks
Bill

Just pick up some Breakfree CLP (CLP=Cleans, Lubricates, Protects). WalMart carries, it, as do most sporting goods/gun shops.
Sure, you can buy a seperate bore cleaner, lubricant, and protectant...but they really won't do a much better job.
If you start shooting precision rifles, then you want to pick up different products...but for your XD...CLP will do it.
