Acetone, Lacquer Thinner
Anyone from experience know if either of these would harm the frame or slide of an xd 9mm bitone? I was enjoying all the posts about coloring the engravings, and saw a bit about acetone on the black slides, but I was wondering about the others. Thanks fellas and fellattes.

ill throw in my 2 cents for ya - why would you want to use something that might damage your gun. do you really want to be the first one to report that lacquer thinner or acetone melts your frame or removes the finish when there are so many other options??????????
i have used lacquer thinner to degrease the slides for refinishing with no ill effects but i wouldnt suggest the use on the frame or other plastic parts. its just not worth it. ive had other aerosol based cleaners turn glocks sticky when cleaning so i usually go with my gut feelings.
ive also used lacquer to remove excess "paint" when coloring in engravings with no ill effects. denatured alcohol may be a better alternative.

Ed's Red bore cleaner has mineral spirit/laquer thinner in it. I've been using it with no ill effects on an XD and LCP. The polymer gets exposed to it, but not soaked in it. I've used acetone and MEK most of my life on engine parts. MEK is pretty harsh. Acetone not so much. I wouldn't hesitate to use it to clean a composite part. My experience is that minor acetone exposure isn't bad. I work at a chemical company and can check on Mon., but I'm pretty sure we use poly containers for acetone. I know nail polish remover comes in plastic bottles and thats just diluted acetone.
The slide is stainless isn't it? I wouldn't see how any solvent could hurt that.

thanks
Thanks for the info.
Yeah, I was referring to the removal of paint and lacquers from the engravings. Thanks for the Denatured suggestion. I sure don't want to melt part of my frame.
Styrofoam and spraypaint comes to mind...
I know mineral spirits is shipped in plastic, as well as alcohols. I also know that different polymers react to different solvents. I sure know I wouldn't get any PVC cleaner on it. Maybe ill just play it safe and color the slide only.
Thanks again.

I'd keep thinners and acetone away.
Denatured might not cut paint though.

Acetone might melt you sight paint or fiber sights. I've soaked my gun in acetone with not ill effects. Acetone didn't harm my slide or frame. I removed paint from my frame by soaking the frame in acetone for a few min.
