I've heard using 3 in 1 oil is better than usung gun oil as it doesn't cake particulate s as well as gun oil. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Maybe so. I actually use Marvel Mystery Oil on my XD. I would tend to think, though, that proper oiling with regular gun oil would not have a caking problem with regular cleanings.

I have used BreakFree CLP on all my guns since I found out about it twenty or so years ago. It had always given my good service. I love it because you can clean the crud out of your gun, oil the bbl and gun with CLP and then go back in a week and run a clean patch through the bbl, and you will get powder and copper fouling out of the bbl. BreakFree will work it's way UNDER copper and lead deposits left after you clean with Hoppies or another cleaner. I really like it.

Mobil 1(5w) on all my weapons. It's perfect so far. It's cold up here in the winter and the oil doesn't thicken up. Works great in my AR's too.

Arrow I've used 3 in 1.

Actually outers gun oil smells just like 3 in 1, and seems to work about the same. I don't let my guns get dirty enough to notice if one collects more powder than the other, so I can't comment on that.

IMHO, do not use 3-n-1 oil on firearms.
Use it on sewing machines and door hinges or as stated on the bottle.
An inexpensive oil that in my opinion works well on firearms would be Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W-30 or an equivalent synthetic auto oil.

HTH.

3-in-1 is just about worthless as a firearms lube. You won't find a better lube for your firearms than Mobil 1!
