Don't clean your gun too much???

I was discussing my new XDM with a friend of mine who is a die hard glock guy. I told him that I haven't had a chance to shoot it, but I've cleaned it, and dry fired it, thats about it. His reply, "Oh, be careful, you don't wanna clean it too much. When I bought mine they said only clean it if you shoot it a bunch, but not if you only put a few rounds through it." Does this make sense to anyone? I know my father-in-law cleans all his guns once per year(maybe more), whether he shoots them or not, and everytime he shoots them he cleans them. I can't see how cleaning a gun could be bad for it.

Clean it, oil it, put it away.

I clean my pistol after every round fired. It drives the guys at the range nuts but one can't be to clean.

I would just clean it after shooting for a day at the range. I've also gone as long as 500 rounds. Frankly, it didn't seem to make much difference. Except that after 500 rounds it took me longer to clean than if I had done it the past 3 range outings each time.

Clean after each shooting. And check and wipe down after handling.

cleaning it too much? that doesn't sound right to me. I try to clean mine after each range trip but that doesn't always happen, though it hasn't gone more than like 400 rounds without a cleaning

I clean mine when ever I get a chance and not after every range trip. Yes you can over clean it. There's another thread here where this guy used a dental pick to scrape the barrel rifling clean, and another that uses lapping compound, that my friend is over cleaning.

Brush the residue off the barrel and slide and frame with a tooth brush and Hoppes run a wet patch through the barrel leave it for 5 to 15 min then run a bronze brush or bore snake. If it's a brush run a dry patch then a oiled patch afterwards now wipe it down.
No qtips, to dental picks, not dremel.

If you do not clean your gun, every time you touch it you will get lead residue on your hands. So whether you give a rip about a clean gun or not, at least remember to wash your hands before eating if you've been handling your unclean firearm.
