Barrel Polish
My buddy bought an older used g23 with very noticeable wear all over the barrel down to bare metal. He decided to polish the whole thing down to bare metal.
It looks sick (mirror finish almost) but I'm afraid of the durability for him. I know it probably would mildly effect the accuracy of the firearm because you're removing a dimension of the barrel, but at this point, he did not put much more wear, where there was already plenty from firing....Is that coating that was on the barrel blueing? Now that he polished the whole thing, will it rust quickly?

I have similar questions. How susceptible would I
be to rust and how much of a negative performance effect would polishing have as far as accuracy and reliability?

The coating on there is meant for protection and rust prevention, isn't it? Why else would they have that coating on the barrel?

I am a newbie to this whole thing but I have read alot about this topic. From everything that I have seen it does not affect accuracy at all. You are only removing a small amount of finish. if anything it actually helps with cleaning making it easier. plus a little bit of extra bling never hurt anything.
read through this thread...
the offical everything to do with polishing thread
hope that helps.

My buddy just went to sell his g23 to a local gun store. It is a bit older but it has all sorts of robar (SP?) aftermarket goodies, including front serations in the slide, grip material, etc. He polished his barrel to a mirror and it looks sick.
Guy at the gun store told him that this dramatically drops the value of the weapon and only offered him $150....wtf?

Yet another reason to keep it stock. I wanted to do this mod when I got my 9 but held off. Last thing I want to do is F with the warranty or get into the rust issues. Now after reading this post I wouldn't want to diminish the value of a commodity that I feel holds its worth way more than most of my other possessions. If I wanted to trade in or trade up the last thing I want to hear is I'll give you 150$ for that thing....

the search button is your friend fellas....anyways, there is absolutely no rust issues with polishing your barrel, I've done it and so have hundreds of others across this board and as far as I can tell no one has posted about it rusting abnormally than the rest of the gun, I've had no issues with rust but any gun that is neglected will rust.
as far as warranty, I've sent mine to springfield for warranty work and have had no issues with them telling me that the warranty is voided
as far as value, it may reduce the value if you try to barter with a gun store, in that case, I'd find a private citizen who wanted a gun with a polished barrel, problem solved, I did it because I never sell any of my guns, I bought them because I wanted them and they are not going anywhere.
Hope I helped answer some questions

See the highlighted text?
That same gun store would have sold that Glock for $400 plus.
Enough said...

+1 to all of the above.
Polishing made my XD45 Compact cycle smoother.
As long as you keep a slight film of grease on the barrel, rust shouldn't be a problem.
And you should be doing that polished or not..
The parts I had polished didn't rust or tarnish either.
Remember boys, when it comes to customizing firearms, to each their own...
BTW - With all the work I had done to the XD45 Compact and accessories I included with it, I sold this pistol for $700.
Point being polishing will not make your XD worth $150.
WTS XD45 Compact NS & Extras * Several Large Pics DFW, TEXAS
BTW - http://customizedcreationz.com/ did the polishing..
