LOL! When I shot the Ma-Duece a TSgt of ours poured motor oil into the receiver to keep it rocking and rolling. Worked great at the time but that was the most horrible cleaning experience I have ever had. Took me three times as long just to take it apart and then three of us spent two hours cleaning that thing. Ugh!

We used to pour CLP into ours. Those .50's hate being dry.

Do the motor oils sit well if the firearm will be in the safe for a while or do y'all use something else for that. I'm set in my ways when it comes to lube, but I find this very interesting and I'm considering trying this out.

As an example I have a couple of old guns that are important family heirlooms that don't come out to play very often - how would the oil do for those?

Thanks

See, I have had a problem with the oils being to thin and pooling in the wrong places (and trust me, I over-lubed once, never again), so I decided to try motor oil. It's thicker and won't just run all over the place. Some of mine seemingly evaporates? Not sure why, but this will sit better in a safe for longer than BreakFree CLP, which is one of the "oils" I had this issue with. The big thing about BreakFree is that it's trying to be a cleaner AND a lubricant, two things that seem somewhat mutually exclusive. I will continue to use it to clean my rifles, but motor oil is my new lube of choice, especially in my Marlin, which EATS lube like crazy.

I just bought some TW25B for my sigs. Seems like everyone says to use it on the rails instead of oil. We shall see.

This has been an interesting thread. I guess synthetic oils can work.

I disagree CLP is just a bad one at that job Gunzilla does an acceptable job. We use it on our 240s. I agree CLP is only decent for cleaning and poor for preservation hence why the USMC says to clean it once a week!!!!!!!!!!
