Whats the first thing to do when you get your gun?
I'm starting to itch as I should be getting my first gun this week. I've already read the manuals of the various guns I'm interested in purchasing, #1 being the XD. I was just trying to find out now what to do so I can just do it when I'm ready. Is there any special things I need to do before just going out and shooting?
When I brought my first paintball gun the people recommended that I take it apart and clean it/oil it so as to get more familiar with it. Does the same thing apply here? Or is the XD one of those guns where as long as nothing it wrong with it dont worry about it?

When you get it, shoot it. After 100 rounds, clean it. Repeat for 500 rounds, then clean every 1000 rounds. Work for me.

Yup. Get yourself a quality oil for the exterior of the slide. You want to get in the habit of keeping the slide protected, regardless of the finish, like you would on any gun. A drop of oil on the slide rails will help too.
DO NOT SKIMP ON CLEANING SUPPLIES. The products offered by Blue Wonder are some of the best I have seen.

Is there a complete kit you recommend? I see all these kits with different brushes, lubes, oils, cleaners, etc its hard to tell what I really need and what I dont. Or do I need them all?

Use the brush that comes with your XD. Get yourself a rod and some patches at your local gunshop or Walmart.
This is good kit for supplies: http://pistolgear.com/proddetail.php?prod=20CL

It is like a wax that bonds to the metal. It will last you thousands of rounds if you apply it right. A tub will last you a lifetime.

The FIRST thing?
Read the manual ,and understand how the firearm operates. Learn the specific features of that firearm , and be comfortable with the feel of the gun
I personally took me XD40sc home stripped it, cleaned it, and lubed it. I'm new to firearms in general, and I didn't want to jump the gun (so to speak) Now that I'm intimately familiar with how everything fits together, and how it all works, I'll be taking it down to the range, and putting a couple hundred rounds through it.
That's just me, but it couldn't hurt, could it?

Your question was a little different than I initially interpreted. When I first get a gun, I read the manual and then shoot the heck out of it. But when I got my FIRST GUN, it was a different story. I was a young kid and it was a ruger 10/22 (which I still I have).
My Dad's an ex-military man who firmly believes there's no real rifle but an M1 Garand. Anyway, he gave me the manual first, told me to study it, and let him know when I thought I was ready. I went through many iterations of thinking I was ready, only to get quizzed and subsequently sent back to study it again. Then I finally got my hands on the darn thing & he spent days & days happily teaching me.
If this is your first gun, I'd recommend reading the manual & taking a firearms course to get yourself safely oriented with the firearm. Good luck and enjoy.
