Metal polish after cleaning barrel?

I was talking with a guy at the gun range today and he said that after he cleans his barrel (XD9), he runs a couple patches with polishing compound on them before the final cleaning. Does anyone else do this, or is there a reason to do this or not to do this?

Thanks!

Wow, can't say I've ever really heard of that, but when cleaning barrels, I always try and think of what has been sitting in the "tried and true" bin for the last hundred years or so. IMHO, I'd consider using polishing compound in my barrel about as often as I would my car.

Schuemann is a manufacturer of match-grade barrels, and they have a pretty good article on cleaning, which tends to point in the opposite direction of putting anything down a barrel due to tolerances.

Hmmmm, you pay more for a "match grade" barrel that has tighter tolerances then you run a polish down the hole and that takes off metal and the barrel gets larger and looser.

Hmmmm....

Well, that's what I think.

There's abosolutely no reason to run anything more then a boresnake or one or two patches down the barrel after shooting. That's for just about every fightin' gun out there. Polish sounds abosolutely absurd, and time consuming...and messy.

An old trick to keep lead/copper fouling under control, just use solvent instead or you will prematurely wear your barrel.

Sounds like something I certainly wouldn't ever do to any of my weapons. A lot of times people will give you BS tips just to be a-holes. Then they laugh and think to themselves how great it is that they got you to damage your property with their douche bag advice. DON'T DO IT!

after cleaning

After cleaning I run a patch with Boeshield T-9 thru the bore. It leaves it shinning and lead / fouling will almost fall out after a day at the range. the t9 can also be used on all metal parts. I've used it for years.
