Cleaning your XD's

How often do you clean your weapons? How many rounds to you fire between full cleaning or just oiling the works? I am new to the XD so please excuse the ignorance on this subject.

You should clean & lubricate after every trip to the range, especially if you plan to rely on it for self-defense.

Having said that, the XDs do stand up to abuse pretty well. Someone did a glock-style torture test, running 50k rounds through it in some pretty severe conditions w/o malfunction.

A good rule of thumb is to take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. I clean mine after every trip to the range and wipe it down with a silicone cloth about once a week.

Don't CC until you have run several hundred rounds through it WITHOUT cleaning. I wouldn't trust my life to a gun that HAS to be clean to function.

So far I've cleaned mine after every range trip, that's a habit from being a hunting rifle guy all my life. (I try to at least wipe down my rifle after a day of hunting if I can.) I think Kaboom makes a good point though (and I will be putting my SD pieces to that test) - your carry piece MUST be reliable in any condition as you never know what type of situation you might find yourself in. Having said that, my take is it is a mechanical device so I'm going to keep it as clean as possible.

I've let mine go many times ... One round and clean it, or a few thousand before I clean it.
I trust it's capabilities, because it's been abused and still works ... EVERYTIME
