You must of cast your own bullets, or bought them when they were much cheaper than they are now.

I purchase from Missouri Bullet Company.
I bought about 2000 when they were about $36 a box. I just checked the price and 230gr LRN is about $38 a box of 500...

What do they charge for shipping 500 rnds?

I was trying to do the math on the cost if you'd of bought the bullets, and i figured the bullets couldn't of been much more than $35.00 per 500. Primers probably didn't cost you more than $25.00 per thousand, and $18.00 to 20 dollars for a pound of powder.

the quigly rifle was a 45-120 paper patch rifle so it was a 510 grain 45 cal bullet wrapped in paper over 120 grns of black powder and just so you know about ten years ago the marine corp did a test at the yuma proving grounds using radar and proved that the 45-120 pp was accurate to 2000 yards and at that range it was still moving close to 1200 fps and had about a ton and a half of energy so you can take yotes with it way the hell out there with iron sights and it makes em flip but very expensive

in the last year i have put 21000 rounds through my service and all i see is a smoother action i average 800 to a 1000 rounds a session so it is possible

i have been a long range competitive shooter for almost fifteen years here is the run down.

first thing to remember is that accuracy comes from the weapon and the shooter with very few exceptions every single cartridge out there is inherently accurate to a given range. the rifle and the shooter do the work to get the most they can out of the cartridge.

just as a bit of info in the 1800's there was a shooting comp that was held in the eastern where 45-70,90,110 and 120 rifles were used and proven to be accurate to a thousand yards or more

so in my personal opinion these are the most accurate cartridges from smallest to largest

.308
.338 lapua
.45-120
.50 bmg

as for the most accurate rifles there are three that i swear by

savage
accuracy arms international
and barret

this is all opinion based on experience granted my best group at a thousand yards was fired by a black powder falling block rifle in 45-120 paper patch rifle that measured 3.85 inches so i know a bit about long range accuracy

that said, I shoot 300-500 rounds a week and I keep an exact log of the gun, date, grain and powder charge of each round fired.
