Best 45 personal defense ammo

Looking for recommendations for the best 45 acp ammo for carry use and home protection. Also what grain is best? Thanks.

I prefer the Remiongton Golden Saber 185gr and 185gr +P. The 230 gr would certainly get the job done as well.

+p IMHO does not offer any real benefits....just get a regular (non +p) HP that is designed to expand well and you're good to go...

I ALWAYS load with one of these two...

1 - Winchester Ranger SXT
2 - Federal HST

Have sent hundreds of these through my XD and NEVER any problems.

I like CCI Gold Dot ammo. Not only is it a top performer that is equal to any premium defense ammo from WW, RP, or FC, but the bullets are available as reloading component bullets - so I can make factory duplicate loads cheaper for function, sighting, and some practice or to stock up on SHTF/TEOTWAWKI ammo in bulk - and that is what I do.
I don't feel the need for +P in .45 Auto.
I normally use 230 grain, but there is nothing wrong with 185/200 grainers either.

We are blessed to live in a day of excellent performing HP bullets where it is almost hard to go wrong.

remember this is all PREFERENCE and opinion from others.

you must make up your own mind.

buy some of all and fire them. maybe your gun will not perform well with some.

I talked to a guy whos father owned a gun store for many years. he uses WWB JHP from Wally world .. its lesser $$ than the rest and you get 50 rounds a box.

I have been asking the same of the guys at the gun stores, or in the gun departments ..... everyone has an opinion. go to Bass, Sportsmans, or anywhere else and buy a box of several different brands and styles. shoot them all. see what you prefer. take old laundry soap bottles and fill them with sand. duct tape them up. shoot them with each brand. see who is consistent in expansion and so on.

good luck!

Good point and I agree completely. (I mentioned it because sometimes they are sold out of the non +P)

Is there such a thing as getting hit with a little .45 bullet VS a big .45 bullet?
