Awesome link Evisr8 !!
IMHO buy as many of the top brands in "8s" chart as you can- and find the one brand which will feed at least 200 rounds flawlessly in your gun -if that turns out to be FMJ so be it - your gun MUST be 99.9% reliable in function. Besides, .45 FMJ has proven 1000s of times in combat to be quite lethal. Good luck (and have fun in your testing).

HST and EFMJ are my choices. DPX is a great round but I think it is TOO GOOD in .45 ACP as it penetrates over 16".

Those are what I'm looking at at this time. I have some 185gr +P that I don't care for much right now, but I picked them up cheap and they feed well. I'm going to make the jump to the Gold Dot 230gr eventually, just working up the courage to tell my wife I spent $100 on ammo that I don't plan on shooting much of. LOL

No need to over-think it. ANY 45 Cal is a suffucint protection round. I still carry Ball ammo from time to time. Any 45 ACP that feeds and shoots reliably will Git-R-Done, That said...I would not recommend any of the Frangible(sp) ammo. Usually i carry Hornady 200gr JHP +p's...but thats because I got a bunch of them. +p's are not needed in 45.

Considering HST tests have showed expansion of .81 to .96 I don't see what DPX buys you that you can't get with HST except a much bigger price tag.

Been lurking around for a while, enjoying the vast quantity of info here about the XD. This is a thread that I felt I should chime in on. I carry 230 grain federal hydo shocks in 1911a1 goverment. Exclusively. I have tried many other brands, but always revert back to these. (the Rangers left what appeared to be brass flakes inside the action of 3 differnt guns and 2 differnt calibers, plus twice the group size, totaly unacceptable). That being said, I still wont carry my (new) XD with anything but WWB FMJ ammo until I can "Prove" the ammo in the gun. When I get home next week, I have several hundred rounds of Fed HS just waiting to be fired. If the XD will fire 200 consecutive rounds with no malfunction, (and shoot acceptably accurate), then I will load the mags with the Hydro shocks and feel I am good to go. (I know that can be kinda expensive, but when it comes to self defense, what is your life worth). If it fails the reliability test, then I will try another brand/bullet design and keep looking till I find the magic pill.

As for any of the frangible ammo, avoid it like the plague. None of it provides enough penatration out of a handgun to be truly effective.
