Ammo Prices and training

So the cost of ammunition has really hit me in the training budget. I've decided to set the goal of shooting 100 rounds of 45 ACP twice a month. I'm thinking if I focus on actual training and not playing, I should be able to keep my skills up. Here is my work out routine:

20 rounds - Loaded 2 per magazine. From the draw. Bang, Bang, reload, bang, bang.

40 rounds - 4 shots fired in rapid succession from low ready.

10 rounds - Precision rescue shot, fired in pairs.

20 rounds - controlled pair - fired weak handed.

10 rounds - precision rescue shot, fired in pairs, week handed.

Anyone else doing this type of focused training?

All that you can depend on from a 45 is that it will drill a .45 - .70 inch hole about 14 inches into someone. There will not be "energy dump", people will not fly backwards, and they will not necessarily fall as if they have been struck by lighting.

Find your local IDPA club and shoot a match. I go through maybe 50 rounds a match once a week and it's a lot better at enhancing my shooting skills than straight lane shooting.

i concur with the IDPA route. scenarios are realistic and it trains you to shoot/react instinctively.

Count me as in favor of IDPA as well. I've only done it a couple of times, but it was fun and revealing. Those moments (under stress) when I find found myself going "crap I can't believe I just did that." I was shooting with my weak hand, concentrating on the front sight - which was conspicuously not on target - but I just had to keep squeezing the trigger didn't I.

IDPA aside, I think your training regimine looks good to me. What I like best, frankly, is doing something structured so you can keep score and monitor progress or decline. I think it might also make a shooter a little more serious.

When ammo started going up, I started vowed to shoot my .22 more. I've done that, and I think it has been useful helping my shooting overall. However, I haven't shot my .45 any less so I didn't save any cash.

I've taken to a lot more dry firing. I've also started trying to read more books on competitive and defensive shooting (Brian Enos's book, Rob Pincus's book, etc.). They're no replacement for trigger time, but they have given me a very good idea on how make the most of my ammo and range time.

As another routine, buy a .22 pistol and shoot 500+ rounds a week at a target not less than 20 yds. downrange. Slowfire, combat rate of fire, mix it up for each day with whatever turns you on. It will do a lot to enhance your shooting, in addition to the drills you've already mentioned with the .45. Plus it will only cost you about 15 bucks a week.

With the price of 45acp going up as fast as gas is, I might have to start look at reloading in the future. For the first time in a long time I have started collecting my brass at the range.

That's funny, WWB hasn't gone up since I started buying it. Knock on wood. The box I bought Saturday cost the same as the box I bought in February. Actually, it's more like 20 moxes, but who's counting?

and it seems if you are loading 2 rounds in your mag, you are not used to the wight of a full mag when you actually need it. I realize you said you do load it up but I would think you need to either carry what you shoot or shoot what you carry.
The IDPA matches are usually cheap to join and very good at training you at the real life scenarios you will encounter. Perfect training.
