Cleaning an XD 45

I've had a question about cleaning the 4" XD 45. I know I need to make sure everything is all cleaned out before oiling it, but exactly where do I need synthetic oil on it? I've cleaned Glocks multiple times in the past, and I know the points where I need to put oil to maintain it, but when I got the XD, it just seemed to be covered in oil on everything inside. Any advice?

Simplest answer: if it slides grease it, if it spins oil it. Rails, and the sear area at the rear of the frame are the only places to even begin to fret about. Don't sweat this, you could shoot the XD for a very long time without doing anything to it. I clean mine very little.

It's a long trip from Croatia where they're built, they oil them up at the factory. Clean it well, I put a small drop of Remington oil wherever there is metal-metal movement but try to keep to the minimum.

Just a related comment, Browning autoloader shotguns are shipped with a lot of oil in the actions, and the manuals clearly say to clean the gun before shooting. Some fools know better than to get a cup of coffee and read the owners manual cover to cover, and then take one duck hunting with all the dirt and crud waterfowl hunting is notorious for, then complain the gun is not reliable.

Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks.

I spray down the whole gun (including in barrel) with: Break-Free - Products: Powder Blast Gun Cleaner

I then blast it out with an air compressor. If I see any dirty spots, I'll hit it with a bit more of that stuff, then attack with a toothbrush. This stuff gets all the crap out from all the nooks and crannies. Expect to see black gunk oozing out from every orifice of the slide.

I run some Hoppes #9 through the barrel with some patches, until it comes out clean.

Then, I spray a little of Break-Free - Products: Break-Free CLP that inside/on everything, then hit it with the air compressor again. I wipe down everything visible with a dry rag, and I call it a day.

My XD45c looks new, and I've got thousands of rounds through it. Total cleaning time after 500 dirty blazer/wwb rounds at the range is somewhere around 10 minutes if I rush, 20 if I'm relaxing - to get it spotless. The only wear on my pistol is the top of the barrel/front of barrel, where the slide rubs against it, and there's still black left there, too.

I have found that using Break-Free as a lube makes clean up easier next time. Also, the air compressor is the best gun cleaning tool since the bore brush.

I clean and lube with Mobil 1 synthetic 5-40W. Lube the recoil spring, BBL, trigger and any thing else I can see. How I do that? After a few drops of Mobil 1 I use the compressed air can to spread it around... any extra is blown away. I hold the grip end down and can air it down to the grip end. Using gravity and then wiping any extra off with a cloth. The can air helps to get rid of the extra oil. Been working great for the last 6 months. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic on my carry weapon as for in Alaska it can get down to the -40 in the winter. Good luck...
