Which 45 ACP should I get????

Hello from Canada

I own an xd 40 Tatical and I like it a lot. My next purchase is a 45 ACP. Should I stick with xd or go for something else. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Most I want to spend is $1,000. Oh ya guys, gun in Canada a more expensive than the states remember that.

Thanks

John

Oh yes I forgot guys In canada A handgun with a barrel 4" and shorter are prohibited, cant get carry permits only transport permits to and from gun club. I know it sucks big time.

If you stick with XD get the compact. Short grip for carry and extended mag gets you the full grip. Its two guns in one.

Fellow Canuck here, but now a dual citizen living in the States. Pistols should only be used for "sport" by a typical private citizen in Canada according to government policy and laws, not self-defense for private citizens except in extremely rare circumstances. Hence, the restrictions on short barrel length, .25 and .32 calibre guns and transport. Pistol magazines are legally limited to 10 rounds; 5 for semi-auto rifles (auto anything is illegal). There are only 4 justifications for restricted weapon ownership: target shooting at a registered club; collecting; employment; or defense of life.

A primer for American readers: in Canada, if you shoot someone who's breaking into your home just to steal your stuff, or even is mugging you, and you're not in immediate life-threatening danger, chances are you'll go to prison, as that would be deemed unreasonable force. In most instances, the use of firearms is deemed criminally excessive, unnecessary and over the top. There are no private citizen carry permits in Canada whatsoever.

I think you can't go wrong with the XD .45 5". The compact is probably out of the question for you, obviously, due to laws: handguns with a barrel less than 105mm or 4.14 inches are restricted. The XD compact is 4.04". I just got a XD compact myself if only to feel more secure, along with a Walther PPS, as I now live in the wilds of Atlanta (scarier than any Canadian wildlife I ever encountered, even that black bear that stuck his head inside my tent in Algonquin Park a few years ago); I never even thought about having one before moving to this city this year, and I've been in the US over 15 years. The XD is safer than a Glock IMHO. They're reliable as hell and you can shoot almost any ammo without any issues.

You might want to ask around your gun club for ideas, as sport shooters are often a different breed and have more specialized needs (like the Walther P88, for example) than folks interested in carry/protection/hunting, similar to the differences in competition target and hunting archery.

JonnyBender,

Greetings from America!

Welcome to XD Talk!

As you are not able to "carry" concealed, don't bother getting a compact model XD. Instead look at the .45 ACP "Tactical" perhaps the model with the thumb safety. If you can import it from another dealer in the US, than consider someone who can customize the gun before sending it to you to make it that much more special.

Unless you get an XD moded all to kingdom come I don't think you'll reach $1000.

XD-45 Tac might be under $1000 if you buy it stock.

You can't go wrong stickling with the XD...something you already know about since you have an xd40. On the other hand you could just move to the US and then get any type gun you wanted...

Another vote for an XD45. They are so sweet to shoot. I am more accurate with my XD45 than any of my pistols.

Wow! Just wow! Do you ask the burglar if he's there for property only and has no intention of hurting you? What happens if you try to stop the burglar from taking your stuff? In Texas, if someone is breaking into your house you are given the benefit of the doubt that your life or serious bodily harm is in danger and you can use force (including deadly force) to protect your life, your family and your home.
