$1k+ xd45 / eval

Just finished my XD 45 so I thought I would share.

$550 desert XD45 - with shipping and Transfer fees.
$250 Precision Engineering - trigger job, mount sights, smooth trigger face, plus add another $80 shipping there and back.
$100 4 extra 13 rd. mags w/ compact extensions
$ 85 Meprolight night sights
$ 35 Big Button Mag release from XD guys
$ 43 Extended Mag release from XD guys
you do the math. Needless to say I got alot invested.

This is my 08 winter gun, due to replace my 1911 and my snubnose .45 long colt revolver this coming winter. I expected alot from this gun when I finished it. Unfortunitly MY skills are not equal to the gun just yet. Being a 1911 guy I thought a trigger job would fix the issue. NOPE. Its just me and 35 years of shooting my old Combat Commander I guess. That XD trigger takes some getting used to. I still cannot perform my hostage shot with any consistancy. Do not get me wrong, the trigger job took out alot of slop and made for a much crisper reset. But it still is not my old Commander with a 3# trigger. Nor do I want it to be. But I have too upgrade, I need the capacity and the light rail. The night sights work better than my eyes and there is my issue. I can see the front sight but the rear's kind of fuzz out pretty bad. But that is indoors. when I took the Front Sight 4 day handgun course I had forgotten what a joy it is to shoot outdoors, big differance for these old eyes. After removing the trigger safety the trigger job feels alot better in that I am not distracted by that clanky do-hicky in the middle of my trigger, bah I got a grip safety anyways.

What I really notice tho' is the slide release and the mag release, I cant say enough about them. I took my SIG to Front sight as I just got the XD back from Precision the day I left and I did not have 1000 rounds of .45 laying aroung to take the course with it. The SIGs dainty little mag release and slide release cost me time in the speed drills so I was very bummed I did not even come close to distinguished shooter. So after putting these on the XD and doing the drills it was amazing. The slide release is @ 2X as long and 3 X thicker and makes the slide lock drills a snap. And that mag release for those tactical and emergency reloads are now painless. Dont get me wrong I love my lil' SIG P6 but it just did not cut the mustard like the XD in the drills. Some may say drills so what. In a gunfight you have 2 adversaries - the other shooter and the clock. You have to be able to kill him first and kill him fast to survive a gunfight. Practice with a timer. If your gun jams in the middle of a fight you better be able to clear it and clear it fast and extended controls could very easily save your life. They do not mean that much punching paper, but in a gunfight a missed magazine reload could cost you your life.
Sorry for my crappy camera and my lousy photo skills .. but who cares.. I am not a photographer anyways, I shoot guns not pictures.

Probably a bad idea to remove the trigger safety. Maybe the grip safety will suffice. Hope you like your new XD! $1000 would be two Glocks for me + a buncha ammo!

If it works for you, great. My Tac's trigger just keeps getting better & I found it pretty easy to transition from my 1911OM. I like the XD so much I am thinking of gettign a 45c to replace the OM for CCW. I understand about the old eyes thing. I would definetly replace the std. sights w/ night sigths. The factory sights work great for daylight shooting but t least a front night sight would help alot in no/low light scenarios. Enjoy!

So how does it shoot and was it worth it. Ya it was worth it. Anything but a Glock I say. I NEED this gun to fit me personally and now it does. And I have always loved the Compact model in .45 . I still am shooting considerably left on my hostage targets, but I think that is just me.. I think. As the sights are not adjustable I am going to have to work with this gun and find its sweet spot. More finger on the trigger.. or less?? Is it really just my eyes ? I think the gun is a great gun and now with all the upgrades I think its a fantastic gun. I dont see why the XD folks just dont automatically put the Precision Engineering parts in at the factory and be done with it. And if they really want a tactical piece they should definnately put on the XD guys extended slide and mag release, it just makes for a better gun. If the XD line was made for punching paper then it would not matter. But as my son would say " this gun is a killer ". So make it more effective and easier to manipulate the controls, especially for us old folks. But its a really great gun and it even looks better now that I removed that silly trigger safety.

What kind of work do you do that would involve the rescuing of hostages?

No, it'd be two Glocks and no ammo. They both cost about $500.

Come on! They cost the same. Out of the box, the XD has a better trigger. Don't believe it? Look at the IDPA rules that allow the Glock 10% more time for the same rating. You can put an extra $500 into a G-Lock very easily too. I added about the same amount of cash to mine, but I got a match bbl. So don't give me your Glock crappola. This forum is more mature than that.

I carry a 1911, because I feel it is safer. Don't even start asking what a quasi-custom 1911 costs if $1K bothers you.

I don't think the trigger safety does much for ya. Just check the NDs for Glocks and XDs. It's always something. Good finger discipline gone awry, a set of keys, yada yada. The danger, as is with most things, exists in the transition. In our case that's holstering.

LOL....

I only paid $425.00 out the door for my very slightly used XD45 so instead of two Glocks I'd have two XD45's and a bunch of ammo....but I agree with you....that's a lot of money to sync into something..

I agree with everyone.. almost. I put alot of money in ALL my guns. This one took about $200-$300 more than average. I am just surprised I AM not shooting as well as I should be at this time. I put my life on what I carry and the lives of possibly others. So it has to be 110% reliable and I have to be more accurate than 90% of LEO's out there. But I like the gun ALOT !! I am just surprised that this trigger and / or grip technique is giving me so much trouble. But I have heard some folks say the XD trigger takes some getting used to. I just thought the Springer trigger would be a cure all.
