Ok, not to throw a wrench in things, but do the current tactical models have the option for an upgrade?

Thumb safeties are not needed on the XD. They are just something else to fool with when the crappola hits the fan. The XD already has three safeties so why another one.

Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire and you are good to go.

What am I missing here?

I guess some people have trouble operating the safety between their ears so they need a back up.

If you are asking if an older tactical w/o a thumb safety can be upgraded to a tactical with a thumb safety, the answer is no.

I asked the same question in an email to Springfield and this was the reply:

"Adding the thumb safety to an existing pistol is unfortunately not an option."
