Thoughts on a new .45XD Compact
I just found this forum after I bought my .45XD Compact the other day. I was excited to see that there are a ton of people out there who are as crazy about their guns as I am.
My two initial discoveries after taking the .45 from the gun store counter to the range (about 30 feet away) were that: 1. It doesn't like remanufactured semi-wadcutter ammo. The first two shots fired but failed to feed with the brass stuck. I had to drop the magazine to let the brass fall out. Ok, so it probably wasn't a great idea to use that ammo, but my 1911 eats it up and that was what I had brought to shoot that day before my wife "talked me into" getting the XD (I guess she got tired of hearing me talk about it incessantly). I switched to Fiocchi 230 gr FMJ and fired the next 100 round with no problem. 2. The slide release is really tough. I assume it loosens up after awhile (?) Anyway, it was all I hoped it would be and more. I'm waiting for my CCW to come in (45 day processing time in KS), but I think the compact will be a great CCW weapon. I spent the last hour or so laughing my tail off at Prelag's thread and the thread about "yotes". I'm looking forward to learning some more about the XD. This is a great site. |

The slide and mag releases both loosen up. Watch a movie while working them and you'll see a literal overnight difference.

being a lefty, the slide release still has not loosened up enough to make it usable for me(and I doubt it will) but the mag release is much better.
Yeah, the XD's don't tend to like semi-wadcutters. Switch to a round nose lead bullet and it will be fine with them.

Congrats on the new XD and welcome to the show. Great choice of guns and caliber.
I haven't heard the name "Prelag" in a while. You must have had to go way back for that story. I remember that one though, very entertaining. I wonder if he's still around or if he left XDTalk to annoy another forum. Anyway, I hope you enjoy yourself and get a lot of useful (and sometimes useless) information here.

I recently purchased a new XD45C, shot 100 rounds through it. Thoroughly cleaned it with Break Free, and the slide release feels much, much better.

Welcome from another Kansan! I also carry an XD .45 Compact in a Blade Tech IWB holster. You made a fine choice in weapons, as I have found my XD 100% with ball & hollow point ammo, but a dismal failure with SWC ammo. I think that is the nature of the beast...and to think I had several thousand SWC's laoded for my 1911's and now I have to start loading RNL for the XD. What a fine problem to have. The more you shoot the XD, the smoother it gets. After about 400 rounds there was a noticable difference in mine. Enjoy!

Your gonna love that compact, might want to look into a Pearce grip extension for the 'small' magazine . . . did wonders for me.
Stick to shooting ball ammo for the first 250 - 500 rounds, everything will smooth out after a while.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm definitely looking forward to much more range time soon. After posting, I read some previous threads that talked about the semi wadcutters, so I could have saved myself some trouble by reading first, shooting second.
Kaboom, I followed your advice the other night and worked the slide release for some time while watching tv. After 40 or 50 releases, I got a decent blood blister on my thumb Byrd, I was looking at Blade Tech as an option for an IWB holster since J.W. Rawles recommends it too. This is probably old news, but I noticed some previous discussion about whether the service model had "service" written on the side of the slide. I saw a few sub-compacts and tacticals that had the type written on the side, but the compact does not. |
