the XD-45 is built like a small tank, general care is all she'll need. i just bought a 45 Tactical and a couple things im looking to add are TFO night sights, some grip decals, and maybe but havent decided about adding a springer drop in trigger kit.

mine also has a Don Fat stainless guiderod and Easyfit polymer magwell..

but the only things i REALLY feel i need is a Tactical light and some 230 gr Speer Gold Dot ammo.

enjoy the Xd-45 its a keeper.

Same as cleaning other handguns really. Take it apart, clean out the gunk from shooting, clean te barrel. Wipe things down, reassemble.

If you have the XD45 Service model then you need to be careful putting the guide rod/recoil rod assembly back in after cleaning. If you get it backwards or even just a little off center it can lock the slide up.

Dont over oil when cleaning. Dont over clean to begin with. Once ever 500 or 600 rounds should be more than enough.

Careful choosing sights if you plan to carry concealed. Sights can hang up on some holsters and create problems getting your draw completed.

I wont comment on lasers/lights. Some like them and feel they are necessary, some of us dont.

Shoot plenty of cheap FMJ to start with to get the feed ramp polished and the gun working smoothly. Then start shooting hollow points to see which ones your gun feeds best.

Plan on a good carry trigger job from Springer Precision one day as a first modification.

Choose a good holster that will conceal well (if you carry) and will protect your gun and still be comfortable.

Clean it after the first couple of times to the range and then DON'T clean it for 500-1000rnds. Some people seem to think the XDs are like finely made target types, but they aren't. They are Service pistols DESIGNED to run in all sorts of muck and mire. Field stripping won't hurt a thing but frequent deep break-downs will likely be causing more wear than shooting it does. Lightly grease the rails and barrel, lightly oil anything that turns or spins and the gun will likely last longer than you and me put together. Craigers called it a tank, I'll call it a sledgehammer, both terms are dead-on.
It's a hella gun, congrats.

Nothing to add other than that the XD is meant to be a fighting weapon. Just maintain it without over doing it and you should be just fine.

Why does everyone suggest to NOT clean the XD often? I'm on my 3rd one and have always cleaned them well before shooting them for the first time. After shooting, I always field strip, clean, and re-lubricate. I have never had any issues. I understand that the gun can go thousands of rounds without malfunctioning, but still feel this is the best practice. Besides, the gun is much easier to clean if it is done more frequently. Also, if it is a carry gun as mine is, I field strip it every week just to remove lint or other debris and to relube if necessary. Again, I understand this type of treatment is not necessary, but fail to see how it is a bad idea.
