Is the .45 Compact available with the thumb safety yet?
If so will the compact "safety" frame be compatable with a standard tact slide?
For those who have used concealed pistols in self defense, is the safety
even necessary/desireable on a weapon like the XD which already has two
safeties?

i dont believe it is... only seen the service model available.. im sure soon enough though.

At this point it is only on the .45 service. I haven't seen or heard that SA will offer it on other models. The new XD-M does not have it.

I would probably call Springfield to make sure. I was going to buy a .45t w/3rd safety but could not find one. I called Springfield & they gave me a model number to order it by & told me if no one could find it to have a dealer call them & they would locate it.
