Is this normal slide action?
On my XD45 service if the mag is out then the slide will stay open. That's normal. But if I insert a mag it won't close. I have to close it with no mag in the gun. To load it I have to pull the slide back while pushing down on the slide release button. If I don't push down and the slide locks the only way to unlock it is by taking out the mag then unlocking the slide.

completely normal.
It's called a "slide lock" Shooting to "slide lock" is shooting until that happens. Semi autos were originally designed to do that in order to facilitate faster reloading processes. Edited to say : This should only happen when the magazine is empty. A full or partially full magazine will not (or at least SHOULD not result in a slide lock back)

Take a training course in at least some basic gun handling and shooting. It will be worth every penny and get you off to a good start. I also guarantee you will enjoy it.

This doesn't sound normal to me. Without a magazine, nothing should be pushing on the slide lock/release. The slide should not stay open. If the magazine is in but empty, yes. The way I read the original post, he means no magazine in the gun.
dvdivx, can you clarify what you mean? There's a big difference between magazine not in the pistol, magazine in but empty and magazine in with rounds.

if you pull the slide back with an empty magazine = open
if you pull the slide back with an empty magazine and remove magazine=open if you pull the slide back with no magazine in it = closed if you pull the slide back with a loaded magazine in it = closed and loaded if open and put a loaded magazine in it and then pull on slide=closed and loaded |

Here's the way my XD45 works.
No magazine: The slide will not lock automatically but must be locked manually. To unlock the slide use rear pressure and release the slide. With empty mag: The slide locks automatically. To release put rear pressure on the slide ,depress the slide release and let the slide go. So without a mag the slide locks manually but releases automatically. With a mag the slide locks automatically but releases manually. |
