In South Dakota you go to the Sheriff's Office in the county you live in. The Sheriff runs a NICS check, you fill out an application and pay $10. In 10-15 minutes you leave with a temporary permit and the regular permit arrives in a couple weeks.
Non-resident is the same process, but you can go to any Sheriff's office. There's not much need for a separate South Dakota permit though because we honor every state's permit. If you live in a state that doesn't issue permits however, you can get a SD permit and it will allow you to carry in the following states. Alabama Alaska* Arizona Colorado* Florida (including non-resident permits)* Georgia* Idaho Indiana Kentucky* Louisiana Michigan* Mississippi Missouri Montana North Carolina* North Dakota (including non-resident permits) Oklahoma Pennsylvania Tennessee (including non-resident permits)* Texas Utah (including non-resident permits)* West Virginia* Wyoming* *Only SD permits issued to those who are 21 years of age or older are recognized. I did the 8 hr class including the range work, got fingerprinted as the SO and paid $105. 22 days later I got the CCW. Local city police depts have slightly different applications and may do interviews but my county SO is very gun friendly so ne sweat here.

Actually, that depends on where you're getting your license. In some counties, you walk in and back out with it the same day. Other counties, you have to go submit your application, then come back another day and pick up your license. Then there's others that mail it. Some drag their feet and wait the full 45 days allowed by law before approving it.....

No permit needed. Go to store buy gun. FFL calls in back ground check. Five minutes later walk out of store and you can carry concealed. L love Alaska.

NY... basic process outside of NYC... take course... select level of restriction applied for (Possess only, Target/Hunting, Business, Unrestricted)... fill out form... get 4 recommendations within the county you live in and preferably the city... get printed... you and your references get interviewed... go to court, see the judge and present your "proper cause" for needing the level of permit that you have applied for... guns you are allowed to carry recorded on permit... photo taken... coupon issued to take possession of gun(s)... permit issued & gun(s) picked up from FFL.
Each county can have different processes... some are easier... some are harder. Mine is Erie county and it is very very hard to get an unrestricted permit. NYC is extremely hard. Permits good everywhere except NYC and are issued for life. They can be revoked sua sponte by any NY judge.

10 dollars and fifteen minutes of your time at the sheriff's office nets you a temporary permit -
two weeks with that nets you a nice laminated card with your name on it. paper is just as good as card until it arrives. voila! the beauty of South Dakota.

I prefer South Dakota's method of no permit needed for possession/open carry and a permit needed only for concealed carry. The reason you want to own and carry a gun is none of South Dakota's, or anyone else's, business.

Lucky. My WA state CCW permit was only $50 but it's only good for 5 years and oddly OR doesn't recognize it but ID does. Otherwise it's the same with no class, no test. Personally I think it should be as hard to get a CCW as it is to vote. But considering all the dead people voting here it would never fly.

I failed to mention that you can expect it to take from 6-15 months to get the permit. And if you move to NY add a year to meet and become friends with the 4 people who must sign for you and get interviewed before you get your permit. Until then, you cannot even POSSESS handguns that you own. Insanity.

In Indiana all you have to do for your Personal Protection Permit is pay ($125.00 for lifetime or $40.00 for a 4 yr.),fill out the proper forms, and be finger printed. I opted for the lifetime. I waited about 2 months to recieve my permit.
