230gr. FMJ Velocity 5" vs. 4"

Hello All. New to Forum. This is Great!
Well,my son has an XD 45 Tactical 5" bbl. What a Great shooting gun!!
I was thinking about getting the Compact model, and was wondering if anyone knows how much slower a 230gr.FMJ would travel out of a 4" barrell vs. a 5".
Thanks, Pete

You will lose roughly 50 FPS per inch. Welcome to the forum.

I own and shoot an XD45acp 5" tactical compact and I absolutely love it. I love the way it feels in my hand and I love the way it shoots. Matter of fact, I am getting ready to buy another one just like it.

Thanks for the Replies.
I`ll take a look at the 5" Compact.
Was looking at the 4" because of the smaller overall size.
I suppose I could shoot a lighter bullet, say a 185 gr. JHP. to get the velocity back up there.
Anyone know if the 50 fps. velocity loss that the first poster said I would lose really be an issue with 230 gr. FMJ`s?
Thanks, Pete

230grs moving 850fps will make just as big an impression on the intended target as one moving 900fps. Would you really want to be in front of either one?

Actually, less than that, 25fps-30fps per inch in the 45acp. This is based on my own chronograph results. With many of todays JHP, it won't matter.
