XD 45 service trouble with CCW
I am haveing trouble with concealing my XD. I have a supertuck and the grip of the weapon gives it away. I do not have the option of getting a compact XD. I wish I had but you know what they say about hind sight. Are there any suggestions on tips and tricks to carrying this weapon. I currently carry a P6 which works really good. I just was looking to carry the XD for the extra ammo and stopping power of the XD.

A lot depends on where you carry, how you dress, and your size.
I'm 5'9", about 160lbs. I found that when I carry my .45 Service, I have to push it more behind my back than to the side (around the 4:30 to 5:00 position). Also, you might want to try a button up shirt. I use a supertuck as well. What I ended up doing though, was buying a XD-9 subcompact as my primary carry weapon. You might consider a "grip chop", either done by you or someone else.
Several have done this, run a search, here is one example. .45 Service grip chop?

The XD service has a large grip and it's not easy to keep in hidden. Placement is very important. This was the main reason I quit carring my XD-Service. |

I have moved it around the back farther but still not that comfortable for me. I am 6'.0" and around 290lbs. I am a big guy. I plan on being down to 225 this fall. I will probally hold off on chopping the handle. That seems extreme to me. I also have six hi-cap mags I would have to buy spacers for. I think I will try and wear a button shirt open like a jacket and a OWB to conceal the pistol. It should not be that bad this summer as long as I have a light tshirt on underneath.

Taking a hacksaw to the grip is a very bad thing to do.
It's a BIG handgun and it take getting used to. I just keep it as my highcap home defence gun with my Surefire 300 mounted on it. |

I have the same problem with my XD tactical .45/ I'm fine if I have a jacket or heavy clothing on, otherwise it is hard to hide with the crossbreed.
Its giving me a good excuse to look into buying a snub nose .357 mag.

rethink about how you are carrying it.. the holster may not be deep enough in your waistband.. and the crossbreed may not be the holster for you..
the grip sticking out is a problem for most people anyway.. you'll have to find a holster that is able to hold the grip closer to your body is what is needed, but that may impede your draw.. the lower in your waistband, and the closer to the body it is, the harder it is to make.. a grip chop is pretty extreme.. and you'd lose capacity.. and if you did use full capacity mags, you'd still have the same problem you did without the grip chop.. i don't have my CCW yet.. but i've been looking at the best way to carry my Service without getting made.. and i'm not a small man.. 6'0" 325lbs.. i have jeans that have huge pockets (no, not those hip-hop things), so i'm actually able to put my XD45 Service into my pocket.. although when i sit, or when i move in certain ways, you can see the outline of the grip.. i've considered getting an XD40 SubCompact.. but the trigger slap that has been talked about, has me hesitant on getting one.. i'm looking at either a Milt Sparks, or a K&D Dakota Defender IWB to carry.. the only real problem is, i wear walk short or cargo shorts nearly all the time, and the weight of the pistol pulls my shorts down.. so, i'm also trying to figure out a good way of concealed carry.. |
