Laser opinion's
I own an XD45acp 5" Tactical and I was just wondering if anyone has a lasermax laser sight on their pistol that replaces the guide rod assembly. If you do, does it help the pistol shoot more accurate and does the slide work good as well?
Any advise will be greately appreciated.

Gun works with 100% reliability. I've had mine in since day 1. The only thing I like better about my Crimson Trace grips (on other guns) is that they're adjustable for windage and elevation as the LM isn't. My CT's are dialed in EXACTLY to POI. Since my XD uses a 6'oclock sight picture....the laser dot doesn't sit right at the top of the front sight like my CT's. I wish it did, but I would only use the LM (or CT's for that matter)...in a defensive situation where it's easier to just look over the gun at the target and not have to focus on the sights.
The other use I've found is when dry firing. It'll help indicate if you're jerking the trigger and coming off the target. Other than that, I leave them off, really (i.e. at the range). Another great thing is that I have them on my revolver which is really my wife's go-to gun if the SHTF. Much easier for her to point and squeeze once the red dot is on the bad-guy, when a situation gets tense.

XD45,
Thank you for your input, that is what I am looking for. I really want to get one but I wanted some input first from other gun owners. Thank's for your time.

I have tried them in other pistols & don't really care for them for one reason, they make you a lazy shooter. If you already an accomplished shooter, I can see certain scenatios where they are handy but if you rely on the lazer to get you hits, what will you do when you can't see it like on bright sunny days or if the unit dies on you? Save your money & put it into practice ammo IMO.

fredj338 you make a good point, but I think it can be a valuable tool when used in the right way. Don't practice at the range with your laser at all -- use that time to work on your technique, marksmanship, etc. When the laser would come in handy is if you're in a defensive situation. For instance, if you take cover behind a file cabinet, and want to peak your head out from one spot while peaking your gun out from another, maybe you're in your bedroom where you can get your gun out on the target but use a mirror to see where the red dot is showing up.
As long as you practice and are proficient without them, I can't see a downside to having them available to you. Anything that puts you in a better situation to survive is good, IMO.

I have a Crimson Trace on my Glock 26. I put it on as I don't shoot the glock very well - at all - so I thought it might improve things. It didn't! I ended up replacing the glock with an XD .45 Service and now an XD compact tactical. I thought of getting a laser for the XD - though it shoots great! and decided the money would be better spent on a trigger job, better sights, etc. So my advice, consider where the money will do the most good and put it there - for me it's on improving the basic gun by trigger job and sights, etc. Chapie+ |

Chapie+, I have given it some thought and I think that I am going to put some truglo TFO sight's on it and then just stock up on some ammo for it. I appreciate your thought's and input on the matter because advice and folk's with experience was what I am looking for.

Putting a laser on a handgun doesn't make you shoot better. What it does do is aid in learning trigger control. When you have that down pat, it will then allow you to aim at targets while seeing much more of your environment. Since your aren't focusing on your front sight, you can look out ahead of the gun for additional dangers. It also allows you to aim at targets in unconventional positions.
I suggest you go to the Crimson Trace website and order their catalog. It comes with an excellent free DVD that goes over the benefits of using a laser. Here's the link - Get A Catalog - Crimson Trace Corporation |
