Why should I get an XD45
over the FNP-45? I've been a 1911 shooter til now.
The FNP-45 USG has the benefit of Cocked and Locked (SAO condition 1)carry and a thumb safety; whereas the XD does not. They're not on the shelves yet, but I'm not in a hurry. Before anyone asks "Why do you want a thumb safety?", I'll state right now, that's one of my personal requirements. They're on my 1911s and Hi-Powers, and I like them. Don't try to confuse me with definitions of "safe-action" or anything else. Why choose a striker-fired weapon over a traditional single-action with a hammer? |

Well, ya can't go knock a 1911. That's what I normally carry, just because I like them. And if that's a weapon that you have lots of experience drawing and firing, then taking the safety off has become a part of that draw, so it's unlikely you'll ever forget to take it off.
The XD does have a thumb safety available. It would result in the same carry condition. You have to understand the safety features of the XD to be able to understand why it's better than a traditional 1911. A manual safety is not necessary with a weapon made like the XD. But it comes down to you cannot forget to turn the safety off, and the hammer never gets caught on anything. The beaver tail doesn't stick into your side, and neither does the safety. Oh, and I don't know the cost of the FN45 yet, but I'd bet it's twice the price.

Only the xd service model has the thumb safety. Just like I've never "forget" to press the brake when shifting out of park, I've never "forgotten" to sweep the safety off on my 1911s carried for duty. Last edited by KenW. : 04-27-2008 at 06:26 PM. |

Why the XD45? Well, there are other choices . . . Glock, S&W MP, H&K etc.
Its a personal choice. For the price though, I thought the XD to be the best gun for the money and maybe a better gun than many that were a lot more money. Three safety systems, now with thumb safety as an option, 14 rounds of .45acp, very accurate for a combat pistol, feels really good in my hand, basically a lifetime Springfield warranty and lots of aftermarket support for parts and modifications.

The 45acp in Tactical also comes with a thumb safety. I have one. Like you, it is a personal preference. Grew up with the Colt 1911 and the Browning Hi-Power and guess I am just used to having a thumb safety on my semi-autos.

One other reason to purchase....
Over 2000 rounds, zero malfunctions - my service model is a great weapon, I have not second guessed my purchase since I emptied the first magazine. I do not shoot hand loads (I should just to save $$$ to buy another XD), mostly ball surplus/cheap stuff , approx. 300-400 rounds of hollow points (Federal and Remington). I'm with Tally XD, for the money, a XD is hard to beat.
