I'm sorry; but if you buy something that's is supposed to be the next great thing, and have to send it away for custom work before using it, what's the point?
Buy a new car and have to send it to a garage to me upgraded? No. They should come from the factory in a proper condition. Now I'm second guessing my choice of guns. If I stay exclusively with 1911s (as I am now) I haven't really lost anything. I haven't sold gun in years, and I won't. |

I would not send any firearm away for custom work until I shot at least 1K rounds through it...if I were satisfied with my weapon as is, I wouldn't change a thing,....however all things being equal,...if I wanted to make changes that fit my personal preferences then, no ham, no fowl...being eclectic in your approach to gun ownership is what make it interesting! If you are happy with 1911 ownership..then stick with what you like best! |

I can't say if anyone should get an XD45 or not, but I'll share why I thought it was a good idea. My first centerfire was a Smith & Wesson 686 revolver. A little later, I got a 1911.
Even though I am quicker on targets with the 1911, whenever I had to choose what to have at my bedside (no carry in Illinois, thank you Chicago), I went for the revolver. Let me stress that cocked and locked carry doesn't bother me and like the poster a page or so above, I've never failed to sweep my 1911's safety off either. I love my 1911 and I think its a great design. In my mind, I just always figured that the simplicity of the revolver might be a bigger advantage to me than the marginally quicker shots. On the other hand, my 357 is awfully loud and the muzzle flash is substantially larger/brighter than 45acp. My XD avoids the 1911's thumb safety and feels awfully simple. (BTW, I think this is why some including me are not thrilled about the new xd w/ safety - I wanted it because it had no thumb safety.) As an added plus, I got double or almost double the capacity of the defensive round I prefer. I would not suggest that the stock xd trigger is equal to that of a nice 1911. It's a totally different system. IMHO, not as good as the S&W double action either (which is not a big knock as I consider the S&W to be very good). But, the XD trigger is perfectly servicable stock. I much prefer it to the Glocks I've tried, for example. For me, for my "go-to" pistol, the XD positives outweigh any negatives as compared to the other options that I've tried. On the other hand, my 1911 has a trigger job so what do I know. |

You can carry the thumb safety model without engaging the safety. All the original safety devices are still working.
I've decided not to get an XD at all. The trigger feels like squeezing a damp sponge. Reset feels about three inches long, where my 1911 is 1/8 inch. If I get anything, it'll be the newer, single action version of the FNP-45. Last edited by KenW. : 05-01-2008 at 01:05 PM. |

To each his own. I have a 1911 and I actually think I prefer the XD trigger and I seem to shoot better with it. I am contemplating selling my 1911 to finance an XD purchase, but am having a hard time with it. I am afraid if I do sell it I will regret it. Either way when I do get an XD45c it will be my carry weapon of choice.

I just got an e-mail response from Armalight. Their AR-26 (.45 ACP Pistol) will be out this fall.
It's a traditional DA/SA though. |

Okay, I went and shot a rental XD45 Compact today. I'll order one from my FFL guy Monday. I'll learn to deal with the trigger reset.
I fondled the FNP-45 and it's way too big for much other than uniformed patrol work. |
