Hi everyone, I guess I can be initiated now since I am a new member.
I do not own an XD yet-But it's ordered & it may be the same gun that KENW might be interested in. It's the new XD 45 tactical w/3rd safety the model number per Springfield is XD9664HCSP06 |

The XD45c I carry was $500 out the door. You can buy a fair amount of practice ammo for $100. If you are looking at a $600 XD45, keep looking.
Sounds like you may already have your mind made up, and not in favor of an XD. I went from a 1911 to the XD, and have no regrets. Maybe the only thing left you could try is to actually fire one and see how you like it. Find an XD owner near you, or a range that can rent one to you. If you like it, fine. How a gun feels to you is a personal thing. Don't take my word for it, go fondle and shoot as many as you can before shelling out the money, no matter what you decide you want.

That was the one thing that has held me up. I can get a service model for $459 + tax & but the tactical model was priced for $539 + tax. The store advised that the extra safety cost more which is not true because when I called Springfield the rep advised that the list price on the tactical w/extra safety is the same price as w/out. What is your thoughts on the tactical? Is it worth the extra $ in accuracy? I am not buying the gun for conceal carry.

Why are you switching from a 1911? Kimber makes some hi cap 1911s. Have you shot an XD 45? How does it feel in you hands? Most XD owners are going to like their XDs, so asking at this board may be biased.
When I buy a gun, I try to shoot one first. If I can't shoot it first, and it turns out I hate the way it shoots, the gun will get sold or traded for something else. With the XD Tac your risking about $150.+ tax, buying it new and selling it used. |

I got a little turned of on the XD when I found there are no plans for a thumb safety on the compact. I originally began this search wanting a slightly shorter grip frame. I gave up on that, but I still have the money set aside and if I don't use it I'll lose it. I've had a hard time locating the Kimber Ten-IIs, are you certain they're still made? I haven't seen them on the Kimber website. Ten rounds doesn't really compare with with 14 and 15. The FNP grabbed my eye when I saw the weapon comes with THREE 14 round mags, and also that my agency T&Ed the FNP-40. Our armorer thinks highly of them. The only thing that detracts from it is there are NO HOLSTERS MADE. |

I really like my Compact Tactical. I don't know if that will / will not be available with a thumb safety - call SA. Since you're not planning to carry it concealed I would get the full size tactical anyway. I find it to be more accurate, more "pointable", and used a great deal in competition. If the price is that much higher you might consider going to a different dealer. Try a google search on the gun in question with "price" after the model and see what it is selling for elsewhere. Someone (I don't recall who) on this forum wrote about an FNP-9 cracking after 2 shots. I don't recall all the details, but it turned me off of getting an FN. Chapie+

You could always get a XD45 service with the thumb safety, and then send it to Springer Precision for a trigger job AND have him change it to a compact. He does a very nice/professional "grip chop" (he mills the grip to match the compact, instead of the more common hacksaw & file method).
