In my last post I stated that I was on my way to get my state TECLOSE certification. It was an education indeed. Parole Officers in the state of Texas can now carry a firearm on duty if they complete this course. It is completed at the cost of the Parole Officer who is solely responsible for what type of weapon and calliber he use's. The choice is made in keeping with state guidelines of course. At this point you have to provide 350 rounds of practice ammunition, and 100 rounds of JHP ammunition for finnal qualification.
Cutting to the chase, of the sixteen officers thier, 14 were armed with automatics, and of those, ten were XD'S. Of the XD's, 5 were 45ACP's. One XD was a tactical, three were service size, and one was a compact. All the XD's perfomed well with two exceptions: one XD 45 had a bullet lodged in the barrell, but that was due to the ammo being handloaded and a sticky residue that was not the reloaders fault being left on the bullet, and out of my weapon, there was a failer to feed I believe due to my limp wristing a bit and the round not feeding out of the magazine properly. A quick pull to charge the weapon nd it fired no problem. This happend with some 230 grained ammunition in a white and blue box. The rest of my ammunition was wolf and although dirty, was excellent out on a windy dusty plain. I qualified with 230 grain Rimington JHP, and it feed well too. In talking to the chief instrucfor, he stated that the XD had certain advantages that other pistols did'nt have in that when charged, the firing pin was set up in such a way that it will fire forward even if the barrell is grabbed and pushed back partially, giving you a chance close in. A few Glocks were thier, an M&P, even a couple of Tauruses. We all qualified. We all shoot well.

Thank you, I thought that there would be a lot of Glocks, but after talking with my class mates, they were doing the same research that I was. We all took into consideration that we needed a weapon we could and will be staking our lives on. We often work alone with no back up, and out in some really secluded areas. Theres a reason the state pays us hazard pay, which ain't much at all.
