Lead Reloads in XD 45
Does anyone have any experience with using lead reloads in the XD 45?
Glock says no to use lead. HK forum says OK to use lead in HK. These polygonal bbl guns generally seem to prefer jacketed rounds or copper plated. Thanks in advance. James E. Davis |

I shot thousands of lead rounds out of my XD40 with no problems....my suggestion is this...after every 200 lead rounds or so (number really is up to you) run 25 jacketed rounds through it, this will help get some of the lead fouling out and make it easier to clean at the end of the day.
OR Take a can of break free and a boresnake out with you and after that number of rounds...100, 200, etc. just spray some break free down it and run the snake through a few times.

The XD is NOT polygon bbl. so shoot all the lead bullets you want. It's a problem in the Glock & HK if the bullets are soft, driven too fast &/or don;t fit the bore well. You can still shoot them but have to clean the bbl. more often. No problems in the XD, it has coventional rifling. I would advise you stay away from the LSWC though. It fails to feed too often & damages the back of the mag. Stick to RN, RNFP or TC.

Lead Reloads
Thanks for the answers above. I was not certain if XD bbls were polygonal.
I have shot some 200 grain RNFP in my XD 45 with success. Also the 230 Grain round nose performed well. I am becoming very impressed with my XD 45. I also have two 1911 style guns and an HK. The accuracy is on par with the other guns. James E. Davis |

Just make sure to clean the heck out of your barrel, I use sweets 7.62 solvent, its basically amnonia, so if you use it make sure to run a lot of pads through with some hoppes 9 to nuetralize the amnonia, Oregon trail makes a great lead/molly bullet for rather cheap.

I just uncovered a lost stash of about 2K 200 and 230 grain hard cast round nose .45 ACP bullets. I usually handload the 180 grain Berry or 230 gr. Rainier copper coated bullet with a medium charge of Clays but with the price of copper these days (even Rainier and Berry's prices are now through the roof) I am planning to shoot those hard cast bullets out of my XD45c and my Glock 30 - the Glock has an after-market Lone Wolf barrel with conventional rifling. Hopefully, I'll have no problems with functioning in either gun.

I pretty much shoot nothing but lead bullets in my 45s lately I have been using moly coated bullets with good results.

I shoot lead reloads out of my XD45 Service with no problems at all. As has been mentioned, give your pistol a thorough cleaning and you will be just fine.

I have found that XD 45s do not like SWCs. So long as you shoot round lead or truncated, you should be fine.
I am going to try lengthening my OAL to see if that will help prevent ejection failures. It seems that the extracting round strikes the round in the mag, since the SWC has a lip, it prematurely ejects the round. (I like that phrasing).
