Question Refit existing factory barrel for match grade accuracy

So I am going to ship my XDs off for work at SA, specifically to get:

XD ® CARRY PACKAGE: $ 215.00
Combat action job; overtravel adjustment added to trigger; Springfield Custom™ 3 dot tritium night sights; inspect entire pistol; test fire.
Above package w/Heinie or XS tritium night sights $ 235.00

So I look over the XD Custom worksheet and I see where SA can,
"Refit existing factory barrel for match grade accuracy" for $ 105.00

I wrote SA and asked what that meant and here is what I got:
"The gunsmiths add material to the barrel when they refit the factory barrel for match accuracy and then recut it to tighter tolerances. This does not affect reliability of the firearm."

The other barrel options were:
Install custom match Barsto barrel ............... $ 275.00
Install Springfield Custom™ match barrel ....... $ 190.00

The $105 for reworking my barrel sounds good. I am trying to figure this out to get it all done at once rather than pay all that shipping again and again.

Anybody on XDTalk had SA do this? What do you make of it?

I decided on the Big Dots. I really wanted to go with the Heinies. Then I had an opportunity to handle a Taurus PT1911 with Heinie straight eights and they just didn't pick up real fast. I know folks who love them and I used to love them. Then I got old and discovered I needed something bigger and brighter. I still haven't actually handled a gun with the XS Big Dots, but watching the Youtube video: YouTube - XS Sight Demo II has made me think, "Hey, I can see those"

I do hear bad things about them as far as bullseye and the like, but they look really quick to me.

i've been looking at the Sure Sights (the yellow pyramid sights) but that XS video really makes a serious case for the XS sights..

most of the time, i don't pay real attention to my rear sights when i'm shooting.. i just get a sight picture with the tip of the stock front sight blade with a blurry picture of the rear sights to basically level the slide, and then try to not do the most common mistakes with shooting..

this seems to be a much simpler sight picture to hold..

As I understand it, the sure sights are not allowed in IDPA competition. I may be (often am) wrong, but I would double check before making a change to Sure Sights.

I know they are not allowed for USPSA Production. The Big dot may not be very accurate for competition shooting but they are really fast sights.

well as far as the barrel goes, i have no clue how they add the metal but it seems like it have to be some sort of welding but then you have to worry about the heat treatment. but if they do weld it then im sure they have to go through and re-heat treat it. i dont know of any other way to add metal to something without heat besides rivits and screws or electroplating, but i dont think any of those would work for this.

Knight Of Light,

I have a lot of respect for you in your service and your competition.

So here's my question, when you say they may not be very accurate for competition shooting, do you mean bullseye or USPSA or IDPA or what? I can see where they would NOT be good for Bullseye but could be good for USPSA, but then again I have not shot USPSA and might be wrong. I understand that there is a bigger target area to shoot with USPSA vs. Bullseye so speed and shots in a larger area means more than tight groups at the bullseye.

I don't really know what I am talking about here - so your clarification is needed and your view on the use of these sights I am thinking about getting for duty use and IDPA and USPSA competition is requested.

Anyone else use XS Big Dots for competitions?

XS sights would be too slow for competition. You may ask why I say to slow, they are designed for up close shooting, yea watch the you tube and he can hit the popper a long ways away, but I can do that with no sights (just using the slide as a reference,) so it isn't really representative of the capability of the sights, it is the skill of the shooter. They are much slower on the hard shots, because the the vertical feedback is not very good. The front sight is so fat that you would also need to take a lot more time on small targets.

A notch and post type sight is the fastest, most accurate iron sight for shooting a handgun. If it wasn't, ALL of the top shooters wouldn't use it. You will not find any serious speed and accuracy shooter using anything else.

The XS is fine for carry were your targets will big big and close, but not competition, it is just too limited in it's design.

Thank you. What would be your choice for duty, carry, night sight, and competition. I realize that is asking a lot, I am just trying to figure out what to put on my duty gun and be able to use it at night / day and competition. I had considered the Heinie Straight 8 night sights, but find them hard to pick up in day time shooting.

Thanks,
Chapie+
