Clean a new gun first or shoot it first?

So I posted my pics and now I have a question? Should I clean the gun first or shoot a couple hundred rounds first to break her in, than clean? The guy gun dealer said shoot first and than clean, but I read many on this forum that said clean it as soon as you buy it than shoot it. What do you guys think?

I cleaned mine first. It had packing goo all over it and was slick enough that I could not grip it enough to pull back the slide. The rail wasn't lubed at all and the barrel had a bunch of solid **** in it. I would recommend safety checking it before hand because you never know who handled it in the gun shop. I would have never found this stuff if I didn't field strip my weapon first.

Field strip it, check it out, clear the barrel, Oil and go.
Thats what I did. Made sure the barrel was clean and clear. Oiled the rails. couple drops on moving parts, put it back together.. system check and went to shooting.

I just wouldnt want to fire it not knowing if the barrel might be blocked or dirty.. And make sure the slide rails are oiled

There will be some packing grease or something in there, strip it, clean it, assemble it, shoot it.

Field strip it, clean it. I did - and it was full of packing grease or something of the sort. It's probably not necessary, but 20-30 minutes is worth the peace of mind to me. Especially now that I've found Break-Free CLP - cleaning is a joke now.

gotta love the boresnake and break-free....I didn't clean my XD45 before I shot it, but hearing some stories and talking to a few people since, I would have at least field stripped it and run the snake through it. It takes all of 10 min, why wouldn't you do it.

Buy it. Bring it home. Read owners manual. Take it apart to clean it. Read manual again to put it back together again. Find spare parts. Take apart again. Find home for spare parts. By this time you need to clean it again.

Drive to range. Get gun out. Foregot ammo at home. Return home for ammo. Back to range. Point gun down range. Load. Target blows over or off back board. Unload wait for all clear. Half hour later target is reset.

Reload. Aim. fire once and the sun sets. to dark to shoot. Clear weapon return home.

That is how my luck goes. But to answer your question. Yes clean first.

It su@ks with only 2 hours of daylight every day all winter.
