You guys need to visit Silencer talk. Do lots of searches before posting as pretty much every question I've read here has been answered there. In short, in most states, a civilian may purchase a Suppressor by completing and ATF Form 4, getting it signed by their Chief Local Law Enforcement Agent (CLEO), and submitting it along with fingerprints (done by your LEO's), Passport style photos, and a $200 check for the tax transfer stamp.

The federal law that regulates NFA items regulates their commerce. Because of the pesky 2nd Amendment anti-gunners couldn't outright ban this stuff. Thus, believe it or not, your final 'approval' stamp actually comes from the US Department of Treasury.

There are additional responsibilities that come with ownership (such as notifying the ATF any time you transport it across state lines, in writing, and likewise notifying them if you change perminent address before doing so). So my best advice is to lurk at Silencer talk and learn from the gurus. I'm just a newbie to the NFA world myself.

Below is my SWR HEMS Suppressor, currently homeless. I sold the HK USPc I originally used with it and wasted months waiting for an EFK barrel they never got round to making (long story, posted elsewhere).

Drive over the border into Oregon and shoot. I know several guys in Washington that do just that, and they had no problem getting their CLEOs to sign off on them.

I'm currently learning how to do work in a machine shop, and I could probably have my teacher thread me a barrel if I sent it to him... This makes me consider doing it now and then when I'm old enough to get a suppressor and have the money to do so, getting one. You have to be 21 right?

I just went through the process. My dealer and I filled out two ATF Form 4s. I had a couple of passport sized photos taken. I went to my local police headquarters and was fingerprinted on a set of ATF fingerprint cards my dealer gave me. I dropped off the two filled out Form 4s at my local Sheriff's office for the Sheriff to sign. I picked up the two Form 4s after he signed them. Then along with a check to the BATFE for $200, the Form 4s, pictures and fingerprint cards were mailed off. Now, I just wait 2-3 months for it to be processed. I'll receive back 1 of the Form 4s with a tax stamp for $200 on it. At that point I can take possession of the suppressor.

Is it worth all of the hassle and getting your name on an exclusive list?

Paying $200 for a transfer and then several hundreds of dollars on a suppressor is something YOU have to think is worthwhile. No offense, but it's not sounding like you think that it'd be worth the hassle to own one seeing as most of your questions seem doubtful in nature...

I think it'd be cool, but $800 (600 for can, 200 for transfer) is another AR, or three or four cases of ammo, or...

Thats several pairs of high end electronic muffs.
Buy a bunch and have the whole family wear them to bed. You will have heightened sensitivity to hear bad guys breaking in, and protection when you take them out!

It would be tacticool however!

[Harpyau, what's the make of that barrel?]

Electronic ears are great. I use Peltor Sport-Tacs.

However, electronic ears do not reduce recoil, increase accuracy, make reduce the sound of the muzzleblast to everyone around (unless you buy a set for everyone at the range), etc.

I haven't talked to anyone who invested in a suppressor and regretted it. I have talked to some people (with a great deal more money than I have) who, after shooting a suppressed firearm, refused to shot anything that wasn't suppressed again.

If it's not for you, that's fine. To me, it is absolutely worth it.

I'd probably throw them off in the middle of the night without knowing it and sleep right through the home invasion... lol.
