Suppressors used to be common, and common courtesy for hunters. President Teddy Roosevelt owned several. They make shooting more comfortable to the ear and dramatically reduce recoil. Well made suppressors even increase accuracy.
During the Clinton Ban years people had to switch to Muzzlebreaks instead of flash hiders. However, I've been to ranges that ban use of firearms with muzzlebreaks because of the noise it forces on other shooters. A suppressor will not only tame the recoil, it will make the range a more hearing safe environment for yourself and your fellow shooters. My SWR HEMS suppressed .45acp HK USPc was about as loud fired dry as a Colibri powderless subsonic .22lr (mind you, a .22 driven by the primer alone, no gun powder). That's dry. Add some ablative (like the can is designed for) and it gets even better. So there you have it: 1) They are for public safety and comfort, like hearing protection and car mufflers. 2) They tame recoil and can increase accuracy so they are valuable to the shooter. 3) Historically they did not have the stigma modern media and ignorant assholes place on them. Suppressors were the firearm accessories of gentlemen and Presidents. |

If you look at the photos of the British Royals, you will see some nice rifles with big fat cans on them.

I wasn't questioning the right to buy one or legality or any of that crap, was just curious (as I stated) on the reasoning behind it, some good points were made and I concede several of them such as hearing damage prevention and accuracy, it's not for me but that doesn't mean I don't think someone shouldn't go buy one if they can.

Someone asked "how do I know if my state allows me to be quiet .."
ATFMachineguns.com I'd also run across a "Gun Laws by state" on that darn wiki thing Gun laws in the United States (by state - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Ok, so I am allowed to get one. But it's a gross misdemeanor if I use it. Great. I doubt any CLEO would sign off on getting one if it's illegal to use it. Sucks for me.
I could always try......but thats a lot of money I don't have right now

I didn't realize they were allowed in the Peoples' Republik of Marilundt; I'm wondering if I want to get one and get a 4" XD45C set up for it, with a 5" threaded barrel. That would be the ultimate home defense. |
