just curious, why oh why would you want a suppresor(sp)? I am just asking because as I was running the uses of a silenced weapon through my head only assassination and covert ops came to mind as professions where a supressor would be useful in the least.

A suppressor would be EXTREMELY useful in home defense. Even though it would still be EXTREMELY loud, it would lessen the hearing damage. It it were legal, I'd have ANY weapon that I intended to use for home defense suppressed. Well, except for revolvers. Dunno how much good THAT would do.

my theory on home defense is that I would want to wake the whole damn neighborhood up, more people freaked out=better chance of someone seeing what is happening or fleeing suspect in the event of a miss, just my .02

Don't miss, and don't rely on your neighbors for anything, particularly when it comes to violent burglary suspects. I'd much rather have better hearing. But, to each his own. I WOULD strongly discourage you from relying on your neighbors, though. Unless they are family, and CLOSE family members at that.

There are many reasons for a suppressor. Fun, showing off, no hearing protection needed(if shooting sub-sonics). And if there is ever an intruder, and god forbid u have to use your weapon, you CAN shoot without alerting the whole neighborhood, which could bring danger to yourself.
But all in all they are fun as hell, and just cool to have. The best way to do it on the XD's to my knowlegde if u have the service, is to buy the barrel that fits the tactical 5 inch models(this way the barrel exceeds out past the front sight) this will give you the room for the threading, take it to a gunsmith and have it fitted and threaded up. I to plan on getting a .45 SWR suppressor, and getting a barrel for my Tac XD .45 and another for my 1911, this way i can use it on either one. Blake. |

.45 is a great pistol round to shoot suppressed as they are generally subsonic and have a big enough projectile to still be effective.

well I can definitely understand the hearing part, already lost 15% hearing in my right ear as a result of a "friend" firing a weapon near me at the range before ensuring hearing protection was on (he was firing my .357...that was loud..)

Not only should suppressors be legal in every state, but they should be right next to the ear plugs, shooting glasses, ear muff and other safety gear at your local Wal-mart or hardware store. It's ridiculous that a safety device is regulated the way it is in the USA.

Exactly, you don't need a reason. The fact that you can buy almost anything with your hard earned money is just a reminder that your still free.
