Safety Checking a New Pistol...

I have been reading this forum for a couple weeks now doing research on what model I wanted to buy. Great info folks! I decided on 45acp tactical all Black! (No I don't live in Cali!) I am so excited to pick up my XD tomorrow. I already bought 1000 rds of Magtech Rnd nose FMJ so I am ready to punch some holes Thursday.
Questions / Suggestions before I hit the range...

I have seen in posting that SA can go heavy on the lube from the factory. True / False? I plan to field strip / inspect my XD WED night to make sure everything is tip top and won't pull a Glock by blowing up in my face! Also, to change lubes to something I am familiar with.

I would love any suggestions for things to look for things to clean things to lube. I wan't to keep things safe so I can enjoy shooting another day.

Thanks Folks

Brush out the barrel for junk and then go shoot.

Thumbs up

Well, I own an XD9, it is a good choice to have XD as they are very accurate and reliable guns, nothing to say about lifetime warranty.

The grease the gun have out of the box is more for rust care while in stock. it is just for covering the metal surfaces. you can feel it sticky just out the box, so in the first shoot it will grab all dust, power residuals and metal particules proper from first uses.

IT is not safe to use Solvents as some can remove or damage the finish. I had use Contact Cleaner. Kerosene Gas is wonderful as is oil based and is friendly with finishes.

To oils it back some people use engine oil, you will be able to find gun special oil. in my case i Use WD40 after 200 rounds, the preasure drains dust and dries clean. There is a white lithium grease from WD40 also (which i use) that leaves your gun shiny, no sticky, and it has a very nice smell.

There are many choices, MAZOLA or WESSON are not good solutions, LOL.

I use Hoppes to clean everything. I'll run an occasional copper solvent down the barrel if I have been shooting a lot of factory FMJ down range. As far as lube goes, I'm a big fan of Militec. I use their metal conditioner and their slide lube.

Any new firearm I get, gets broken down for cleaning before the first round goes down the bbl. Some manuf. use alot of grease to preserve their firearms during shipping. This stuff is not shooter friendly, espectially in the bbl & chamber. Break the XD down as you would for reg. cleaning & thorougly degrease all the reachable parts then sparingly apply a good gun oil. Now you are ready to shoot.

This is what I was looking for. I didn't think that gunk SA packs in the pistols was very friendly for range use. I will definitely strip the gun to relube and safety check it. Plus, I will be more familiar with my firearm. I need time to bond!
In my Rifles I use TetraGrease a Teflon boundary lubricant for bolts. This should work wonders on the slide. On my sears and springs I use ATF (automatic trans fluid.. smells terrible but no rust EVER and temp has no effect.) In my Barrels I use Kroil for a copper and powder solvent. Kroil has a strong smell at application but it does a great job.
Does anyone ever put a dry film of grease on the outside of the mags? I read of one gentleman doing this but its the only time I have heard of it.

I broke mine down (field strip) before shooting (xd45c) and it was full of gunk. I ended up spending an hour or two cleaning all the goo out until it was just about bare metal, then re-oiling. This is extreme, I think you'd be fine just cleaning out the barrel and going forth.

Cheers,
David

What a sticky mess! Took me two hours to clean everything. But the slide is beautiful now and relubed.

Sounds like we were on the same page, then. After that first cleaning, 20 minutes with a field strip/clean out, it was good to go.
