Taxes and buying firearms over the internet
I have done some reading and research and now I am going to ask the question. If you are buying a firearm from a licensed dealer what are the tax requirements? I know that if you buy in state over the internet there are state taxes but what about across state lines? Thank you for any and all help.

I live in VA. Bought my XD45 from FL. No sales tax. Bought my XD40 from KY. Ditto.

I have bought several guns over the internet, and to date I haven't had to pay taxes on the gun if you are ordering it out of state. If you are purchasing the gun on the net inside the same state, you will have to pay taxes on the purchase. Most of the time dealers will have an extra handling or packing fee, but if bought out of state you shouldn't half to pay taxes. FYI

If you buy on the internet from a business that has a location in your state, then they'll usually charge you sales taxes.

Some states, like Alabama, ask you on your state income tax form if you purchased anything across state lines and let you pay the sales tax on it then. It's on the honor system. So, if you don't report it, you don't pay it.
I've never paid sales tax on anything I've purchased from another state, including firearms. |
