And I WILL claim TOTP for NO-ASS-AT-ALL!
There in lies the problem I manage.

Thank you guys terribly for this thread.
My father-in-law-to-be wants to by my XD9 Tac. from me and conceal carry it with a shoulder holster. I'm personally at a loss for how he thinks he'll carry it, considering he's several hairs smaller than me (5'6" 175 lbs). Then again, he always wears a jacket ...

I know where you are coming from. I am 6-1 255#`s. I carry a 1911a1, or Para P14, or the XD45 Tactical. For my 1011`s I LOVE the MS VMII. For my XD45 Tactical it is carried in a 5ShotLeather Uncle Lou. Comphy, and all day carry is a cinch. I am a big guy, I don`t try to carry at 4 o`clock, it is carried at 3 o`clock, or 2:30. Get a good leather holster and wear a shirt that is not too tight. No loose t-shirts for me. A nice large shirt, and sometimes a fannypack. Tommy`s fannypack to be exact. It will hold the 1911, or the XD45 Tactical and I don`t get a second look. Long t-shirt, duck tailed shirt, light jacket, windbreaker etc. No notices it and in 4 years no one has said a word.
The Tommy`s Fannypack has a wide belt to carry the load. It does not hang like an udder. I once saw a guy with a fannypack on and it was very obvious that he had piece on him. The thing hung down below his jewels. |

I find the tactical easy to conceal in a standard Blackhawk Serpa CQC holster, but then again I always wear a jacket or long overshirt, I sem to have a bit of trouble drawing the tac's mass from IWB.

When I had mine I carried it in a Crossbreed IWB. Very comfortable and easy to get to.

I have one with a crossbreed holster. I like it on my side, but can only hide it if I am wearing a sweatshirt or jacket. If I am wearing a loose t shirt I can hide it unless I sit down. It isnt the best choice, thats why I am looking for something smaller right now.

Concealing the Big One
Anyone can CC a 45 tactical year round, regardless of weather.
5'7" 142 lbs no problem concealing xd45 tactical. Note: I like Comp-Tac all kydex holsters IWB and belt/paddle, don't like the Minotaur IWB with leather because harder to holster the weapon and requires more force to extract pistol. Carried the big xd in Houston, New Mexico, Arizona and Florida. I use one of 3 different colored Milt Sparks 1 1/2 inch contoured belts. SUMMER COCEALMENT: t-shirt or shirt with sport jacket (secret sizing technique) for a cover with Comp-Tac Settable Cant holster. I would normally wear a 40 inch regular chest suit or sport jacket- but for concealed carry I now buy all my suit and sport jackets size 42 but get them in short which results in a perfect arm length and for the bottom of the jacket for me. If you wear a long, you could go up in chest size and try a regular length. If you wear short, you might need some tailoring to achieve this. The drape of the material can be important; problems I have seen are from material that is two thick which does not drape well around the pistol but rather rides there like a piece of cardboard sticking pushed out by the pistol handle. That happened with one rather thick, stiff Brooks Brothers cord jacket, and with the 511 heavy cotton vest. I have some fine, thin silk sport jackets and have not had a problem with the thinness of the material re concealment. My sport jackets vary in cost from $39 on sale at Penny's to $500 from high end outlet stores so you don't need to spend a lot of coin to conceal this way and still look sharp. As always, slip something a bit heavy in the jacket pocket on the carry side, like keys or an extra mag, so it is easy to throw the jacket behind the pistol as you move your had for the draw. I like the Comp-Tac settable cant holster which you can get in deluxe which comes with interchangeable belt loop or paddle but I bought one of each since you need an allen wrench to move screws to change the carry type. I use the paddle when I know I will be places where I can't carry and would want to remove my jacket and hence holster rather than sport showing off an empty holster (even if that is the latest political survival statement on college campuses). Note that the settable cant holsters do tend to ride a bit higher than other outside the waistband designs, particularly when used with the paddle. If getting your arm/hand up a bit higher for the draw is uncomfortable or concerns you, compare the variation before you buy. This position however can be helpful when wearing the holster under a short coat or sportcoat. The belt appliance does have a low mounting position available also. I cant each with the pistol riding as low as is possible on each since when canted, the sport jacket easily conceals the xd45 tactical barrel. Two jackets I haven't replaced are my Harley Davidson Nevada nor FXRG heavyweight jackets. In medium size those zip so tight to my body that it is uncomfortable to put much of anything in a pocket on them, let alone hide a full size pistol inside. I'm not keen on paying $500 for a new jacket to wear on the motorcycle where my hands are not really free to draw a pistol anyway! - so I haven't even gone to experiment with a large to see if it is too big to wear and if not, would it conceal a 45xd with the paddle set for highest position? I am open to ideas on how to carry anything concealed with those jackets other than a Keltec P3AT on a holster hanging from the neck. Note that in New Mexico, current laws is only one concealed carry firearm on your person. Legally however, your motorized vehicle is the same as your home in NM so you could hide firearms all over your bike if that were possible. Would apreciate some ideas on how to carry the xd45 on a VROD so it is concealed but readily available. A fanny pack worn over the motorcycle jacket is the only idea I have come up with. WINTER: I could and sometimes do use the sport jacket with belt carry, and add a sweater for layering/ warmth. But my personal preference when it is colder is to wear an unfastened winter jacket over a sweater over a shirt and conceal the 45 appendix carry with a Comp-Tac C-T.A.C IWB under the sweater. Becuse of my height however, the 5" slide on the tactical using appendix carry does sometimes dig into my leg. In the winter to avoid that, I tend to carry the xd45 service model which is comfortable even when sitting. Most of my pants are from Brooks Brothers outlet stores which sells durable attire in odd and even sizes. I usually wear a 34 waist but find the 35 inch waist comfortble for the IWB C-TAC for the 45. I like that holster because if provides many adjustment options and is tuckable. If I wanted to skip the sport jacket in the summer, I have sometimes worn a loose, somewhat bulky shirt tucked in to conceal. Note that I don't have a bulging belly so canted, the full size xd45 handle conceals rather well into my abdomin with appendix carry with tucked behind a bit heavier fabric- but wearing a bulky sweater should hide it there for anyone. For speedy draws though, I prefer paddle or belt carry under the sport jacket during summers. FANNYPACK: When I am someplace where I can't carry concealed, I will wear a gun fanny pack with the draw loop out, just to see what happens. In more than 10 years of doing that I have only been hassled once- at Disney World 3/08 I thought one of the security guards at the park entrance was going to strip search me when he recognized the bag. I had a wide screen Canon video camera with shotgun microphone on top in the fanny pack but having seen that gun fanny pack, that guy made me empty all my pockets (in my 511 cargo pants which were full of spare batteries and stuff for a day in the parks with a 5 year old with severe allergies including her epi stic). SOMEPLACE HOT: IF I know I will be active and don't want to wear a sweater or sport jacket to conceal, then I do use a fanny pack. My favorite is the large Blackhawk because it holds the tactical or service pistols and has BELT LOOPS. In addition to the duoble press release on the pack belt (you have to depress and hold a button in the center of the belt latch then also squeeze the sides), you can thread your belt through loops on the back of the pack. I have a Desantis fanny pack from when I carried in Connecticut in the mid-90s. A quick pinch on the latch and the fanny pack is on the ground, or in the hands of the bad guy who snuck up behind you while someone distracted you from the front. The best thing about the fanny pack, it is a faster draw than on the belt dominant hand side carry, which is faster than under a sweater, appendix carry. Maybe a tenth of a second from one to the other, but still faster, for me they are.

I did find a good cheap Shoulder Rig for my XD45 Tactical in the
Under Armor Made sure you get the tie-downs for the gun side at least. But it fits the gun and me quite well. Keep this in mind, there is no way around the fact that the XD45-Tac is BIG. it's only gonna conceal so well. |
