Even smaller calibers that don't cause discomfort when shooting can damage your hearing over time. Use hearing protection. Like a couple of posters above, I didn't listen to warnings and now I pay the price.

It might go away, it might not. You went and did a rather foolish thing, and permently damaged you ears. Your hearing never "heals". Your brain just learns to filter out the ringing as "white noise" and you don't notice it as often.

I know the feeling.When I was 21 I bought my 1st handgun,a Colt Anaconda 44 magnum.I shot 6 rounds without hearing protection and thought I was gonna DIE from the pain.It took about 2 weeks for my hearing to come back.Now Im turning 35 and I use hearing protection for EVERYTHING.

To anyone who reads this thread. Protect your hearing at all costs.

Was up at the VA hospital today for Physical Therapy. Also had to pick up some more batteries for my hearing aids.

Too bad the hearing aids don't do much for the tinnitus. I have a set that has noise maskers in them for when the tinnitus gets real bad but they are lousy hearing aids. I prefer the In The Canal pair for straight hearing aids.

If you damage your hearing and get to the point where you need hearing aids you will be shocked at how much they cost. A decent set of behind the ear aids can get gotten for $2000 from CostCo. Models like what I have that fit in the canal run $3500-$7500 a pair. And if you think ammo is expensive go out and price batteries for hearing aids. At least my aids and batteries are free!

I wear plugs and muffs at the range.

But I did get a really great new TENS unit at the VA today.

Two things I would never wish on anyone that the Military gave me for free.

Screwed up lower back.
Tinnitus and 65%/75% hearing loss.

dang my ears starting ringing just reading this post haha, seriously about 6 months prior to getting my xd, first pistol, i was on this website and all over the internet research probably every pistol out there. when my 21st birthday came i went and picked up my xd 45 compact i was so excited you have no idea. i grabbed a box of shells and went behind my house to the range i built. pulled up shot, and went "wtf" wow the 45 is ridiculously loud. i couldnt get through one mag without running back to the house for ear protection. now i try to have em in all the time but when there is an opposum on the side of the road its hard to resist. yea inside a vehicle the passengers usually complain too. i always get my buddies with it that are like omg i wanna shoot your pistol..haha ok

Something that I have done in the past when I do something that causes my ears to ring is to wear ear plugs after the fact. Just going about the day with ear plugs, often not inserted very far, just enough to take any possible edge off of any loud sounds, as it seems my ears were sensitive to sounds that normally didn't bother me for a few days after being damaged. Kinda like staying out of the sun after a bad sun burn, giving the damage a break from being exposed.
