I want an XD45, what about ammo?

I've been wanting an XD45 for a long time now. I don't know all that much about .45acp ammo and was wondering what does everyone like to shoot for practice (cheap, but reliable), and what does everyone like to carry for personal defense?

I practice with Remington UMC 230gr and carry Hornady TAP 230gr +P. I try to shoot my carry rounds at least twice a year to make sure my gun still feeds them right as it wears.

How well do the Speers do at the range? Are they hollow points? Do they feed well?

I fly left seat in the Shorts 360 for a cargo company.

Practice - CCI Blazer 230gr FMJ's (or Blazer Brass when I can find it at a good price).
Self Defense - Speer 230gr GDHP's or Hornady TAP 230gr JHP's

As matiki mentioned, I also shoot a box of carry ammo (i.e. HP's) every couple months to insure proper feeding. So far to date, not one FTF with anything I've put through my XD45 Compact (knock wood).

Practice CCI blazer 230gr FMJ or WWB 230 FMJ
Carry 230 Gr Federal HST +P HP (some say they have had trouble but I can't get my XD to choke on them)

They feed just fine and yes they are hollow points, that was the first thing I did shoot it just to make sure the XD liked it. From what I hear on the forum is the XD like's to eat just damn near everything. I went with Speer because everyone here reports them as a great round. Like I and everyone else will say do your research and fire it.
