Alternative Gun Coatings..
i scuffed my XD45 Service's slide and it took the Melonite coating off in a very small spot.. it looks like a dremel buffer wheel scuff.. true, it's pretty insignificant, and i could just blue over it and forget about it..
i'm not too hot on epoxy paints, which Gun Kote, Dura Cote basically are.. (if i'm wrong, please educate me on it..) this has led me to read up on industrial tooling coatings and the processes on how they are applied, and how resilient they actually are.. i know that there isn't a indestructible coating, but i'd like to combine industrial coatings to get closer to that, than just an epoxy paint.. i'm thinking of having the inside of the slide coated in Chromium Carbon Nitride, as well as having the locking block coated.. it's not as hard as TiN coatings, but supposedly has a better lubricity on sliding parts.. and have the barrel CrN coated, or completely polished.. then have the outside of the slide done with layers, CrN/TiN and finished with TiA1N in black.. i want to also have all the internal parts coated in CrN for wear properties, as i plan to have this pistol for quite some time.. i've thought about the N3 coatings from Robar, but i just don't want a Bi-Tone pistol.. if they offered the same exact coating, only in a very dark nickle, or black, i'd probably do that.. am i simply over-thinking it?? or is it just throwing money away on something that would make a minimal difference over the lifetime of the pistol?? or would it be a sound investment on preventing wear and extending the serviceable life of the pistol?? i understand that the tooling coatings will be expensive, as opposed to prepping and shooting with DuraCoat, etc.. |

You have to weight the cost of tooling coatings compared to the duracoat etc etc. As far as the melonite being damaged, it more than likely wasn't damaged. The melonite is a metal treatment that is impregnated into the metal. you would actually have to gouge out the metal pretty good to get the melonite removed or damage. The black finish on your pistol is simply that, a finish. It should only be cosmetic, and shouldn't effect anything. I would prolly just look into a standard type duracoating, Molyresin, or some type of baked on finish. Im with you on darker coating though, not much of a two tone person myself. I have a local friend that does molycoatings, and when the time comes to refinish mine, i'll prolly go that route. I have him do a glock for me in the past, and the finish seems to wear very well.

I use ten ring precision gun kote "kg gun kote" and have had excellent results. I'm all for trying new things and must admit it would be unique, it's a little over the top to fit a blemish. if that is your goal. if you just want to play around with different finishes then go fore it..... well i like the idea.

We've been beating the heck out of it and it is very excellent. Try taking a nail to a paint/bake finish.
