Hornady TAP Personal Defense Ammo Question
I have had my pistol for a bit over 2 weeks and have put 700 rounds through it of basic range ammo. For carry I just bought Hornady TAP Personal Defense Ammunition 45 ACP +P 230 Grain Jacketed Hollow Points.
I shoot a standard 4'' Springfield compact 45 ACP. My question is will this ammo be ok to shoot, or will it be too hot? I didn't read the +p until l i received it in the mail. Thanks for all the help. |

It should love that ammo! It will have a little more snap in recoil but the gun will handle the higher pressure of the +p just fine.

I have heard that TAP ammo penetrates about 14" or more. Definitely good for center mass hits in a self defense situation. If the police carry it, it is generally very good to go. With nay defensive ammo that you may be trusting your life to, you want to take that ammo to the range to make sure that it is 100% reliable. Costs a lot, but your life, or someone else's, is worth it.

I feed that same ammo to my 45 service and compact and they both love it. I have found though that it shoots just a little bit higher than regular ball ammo of the same grain, but not high enough to worry about. And it shoots like that in both of them.

I load all 3 of my XD's and my 1911 with TAP 200g +P ammo. It has always shot flawlessly and is extremely accurate.
I really like the fact that they use a low flash propellant to reduce the risk of a blinding muzzle flash during a night shoot. The shape of the actual bullet is taper more than other JHP's which gives reliable feeding in a stubborn 1911. For me, it's as close to a perfect round as you can find.

New XD owner here. Is this order in which you would recommend them?

I've heard that
HST is the most inexpensive premium SD ammo - true? Is there a 'cheap' place to buy it?

The Ranger does about .85 caliber with 12 inches or more. The new Ranger is supposed to do even better but I have not tested it yet. The Golden Saber is usually around .78 to .80 caliber with 14 inches or so. The Golddot is a good load on vehicles but its expansion is less at around .65 to .70 caliber with 14 to 16 inches of penetration. Pat
