Did I do it correctly...
I just completely stipped and cleaned my XD 45 and I'm a little paranoid that I did something wrong putting it back together. Everything functions the way it should when racking the slide and pulling the trigger but I can't help but think I might have missed something. Any advice on incresing my confidence?
Thanks |

Put a bullet in and pull the trigger.

Why do you think you did something wrong? There is really only one way to do it. Check your manual, it tells you exactly how to do it. Or do what they said, fire it! lol

If you didn't have any extra parts when you were done and everything fit back together and functions correctly, good chance you did it right. In my opinion, it isn't a difficult task to strip it, clean it and put it back together correctly. I'm sure your XD is fine.

This is not a stupid question. It is a good idea to test your weapon for functioning after reassembly. With field stripping testing is optional, but after a detail strip/rebuild (on a 1911 for example) parts could be missing or positioned wrong in such a way that the firing pin may not move when the trigger is pulled. This is not likely to happen with the XD design and a simple field strip, but there is an easy way to test your gun without discharging a round. Here is something called the "pencil test":
1. Check that gun is UNLOADED and chamber is EMPTY 2. Put on safety glasses 3. Insert unsharpened pencil (eraser first) into the muzzle, so that the eraser rests on the breech face/firing pin hole 4. Point gun at ceiling, AWAY from face 5. Pull trigger The pencil should launch and clear the muzzle. If anything is wrong with the firing mechanism or safeties, the pencil will not move. It is important to feel confident that your weapon will function when you need it to, so the original poster's concern is a valid one. |

Removing and reinstalling the slide, barrel, and recoil assembly should in no way effect the functionality of the action.
However..... one habit I've had for years (and I think it's a good one) is to do a full safety check afterwards. 1. Make 100% certain that the gun is unloaded. This goes without saying. 2. Test the grip safety. Rack the slide to put the pistol into battery. Now hold the grip below the grip safety with one hand, leaving the grip safety untouched, and pull the trigger with your other hand. The pistol shouldn't be able to fire. 3. Test the grip safety - Part II. While still holding the grip below the safety with the safety uncompressed, aim at the floor and pull the trigger. It should not fire. Now make a "pushing" motion toward the floor while pulling on the trigger. It still shouldn't fire. This is to make sure that the grip safety springs aren't worn and weakened to the point where the safety can compress by gravity. 4. Test the trigger safety. Hold the pistol in a normal grip with the grip safety depressed. With your other hand, carefully pull the trigger without touching the trigger safety. This can be a tad tricky with big meathooks like mine, but easy once you're used to it. |

When you say you field stripped your XD, did you do a compleate tear down of all the sub asseblies(trigger, firing pin assembly, grip safety) or was is the basic field strip and cleaning(removed slide from frame, removed recoil spring and barrel)? If it was a basic cleaning and you did not take apart the slide assemblies or trigger, then the pistol should work if you reassemble it correctly.
I have used what Wild Rice describes to test the firing pin using a pencil. Just make sure it has most of the eraser. |
