^That's funny you mention it, because like half of my mags for my XD45 also have a little bulge, and even a little bit split at the very top of the mag...just like you are describing. I have NEVER used any sort of wadcutter ammo though. Strictly FMJ ball and JHP.

Yep... The guy at SA said that it could also be caused by the sliding block (for lack of a better term) on the under side of the slide just being rough from not being broken in yet... I asked him, and he said that it would NOT viod my warranty if I polished it, so that's what I'm going to do...

Try some 600-1000 grit followed by some rouge. Rubbing compound might not be sufficient. Give it a good fluff and buff.

You did real good snooping out these mag problems. I hope you get that gun back to working flawlessly with the HST rounds so we can all keep using this fine piece of modern ammo technology!!

I actually meant "rubbing compound on a Dremel buffing wheel." I just didn't say that to them. Worked VERY well polishing the machining marks off of the feed ramp of my 639...

Thanks! My first job out of college was as a Test Engineer for a lock manufacturing company (door locks and padlocks)... Break stuff, find out what broke and why, report back to design team, repeat . With the exception of the crappy pay (low 40hr/week salary with a 75hr/week schedule), crappy schedule, and crappy management, I LOVED that job! They actually teach a VERY good, entire semester, class in the Purdue EET program specifically on troubleshooting electronic circuits, but it applies everywhere...

I, too, hope that I can start using the HST! Time (and about 200 rounds) will tell, though! The more I think about it, though, with HST's being the big hollow-point that they are, and it would seem that since those mags would feed FMJ 100% in over 300 rds, and TAP 100% (in 80 rounds anyway), but not HST... It seems to me that EFMJ may be the way to go, because everything doesn't have to be "as perfect" to reliably load ball ammo as it does to load any hollow-point... I wouldn't compromise on the full-on HP ammo with a 9mm, but a .45 is already plenty big, and the EFMJ would add some size to that, and still more than likely feed even if there is a magazine problem... I've got some thinking to do on it... and LOTS of testing

[no honey, ammo's free for this gun... it's one of those package deals...]

On the other side, though, I think that maybe my issues were caused by by the bulges in the back of the mags, so maybe after I get the new mags, and polish up that slider plate like a facking mirror, it may be less prone to failure even with full on "frying pan" hollow-points... Time will tell, I suppose... I'll definately keep this updated!

I definitely like the EFMJ and I use it as my primary ammo for the XD-45C. The HST is kind of like backup to me. I have bet my chips on the EFMJ. They would pack a good one-two punch methinks!

Hi Guys! Just my 2 cents here. I carry a XD .45 Service and my experience with the HSTs have been no problem. I do handload and I have used the Speer 225 grain HP, the Speer 230 grain GoldDot HP and the Hornaday 230 grain HP all with no problems.

Hmm. HST feeds fine in mine. Go figure.

I think we are going to find that Mike had a mag problem and that he will be running smooth as silk once he gets the new goodies from SA. I am a big fan of Federal LE ammo.

I belive this is correct... It just screwed me up because it wasn't just one mag, but (2)... I didn't think I'd get 2 bad mags, so assumed it was something else.

Actually, I think the real problem was that the sliding block in the slide was pushing the top round back too hard, because it was not smooth enough. It did take quite a bit of polishing last night to get it smooth. Whether it's the real cause or not, the mags that had the worst bulge in the back of them from the round being pushed back too hard, were the ones that would fail to feed properly...

I'm going to the range to run some hard ball through this afternoon (and test my dad's brand new Kinber Ultra Carry 3"), and we'll see if the bulge comes back...

Mike

Great news! Let us know how the buff affects shooting the FMJ ammo
